Overdrive is long legged gearing and is designed for high speed cruising or speeds . Keeping it in drive keeps the trans from constan up and doe shifting. which it will do. besides being in 3rd gives you better response at low we speeds. and OD can waste fuel at low speeds because of constant up and down throttling. Good luck. It's basically a gear just to keep the car rolling when cruising.

Overdrive is designed for highway use, to lower the engine's rpm's and conserve fuel. It will not hurt your vehicle to drive it in drive in the city.

2010 ranger when im in town driving at twenty five or thirty do i need to leave transmission in or out of overdrive when exactly should i use the overdrive button????

it is immaterial when the over drive is to be used
If the constant shifting is annoying you then switch it off
The over drive is just that
an extra high final gear in the transmission to reduce the engine rpms at high speed to save fuel . It can be set for automatic engagement or turned of if pulling heavy trailers or caravans or carrying full loads and so save wear on the transmission

I just bought a 96 Nissan maxima with a new engine. Drives great, but...today I noticed the overdrive button was on, seeing that I usually only rive around town I turned it off, now the car doesn'

to start with does turning the od button on allow it to start
if it does leave it at that because it will not get to over drive unless throttle settings and road speed are right
the problem with used cars is that previous owners change things and don't pass on the changes so it may have been tampered with
you could always take it to an accredited auto electrician to have the circuit checked out for changes

BA Fairlane V8 - will not reach top 'gear' (Automatic) til 70kmh, so all city driving at 60kmh is done in 3rd. Can the computer be reset to reach 4th at 60 kmh ?

there may be a ecm flash that would enable you to lower the 4th gear lockup, but why would you want to do this? Unless you are driving on extended level surfaces the lower speed would 'lug' the engine (not good) and it would probably use more gas-the dealer may be able to do this, using a Tech II or similar device, don't know if they would though. Your overdrive gear is for highway speeds, not around town driving-it's actually better for your trans converter not to go into lockup at low speeds, and is probably suggested in your owners manual to put the selector in '3' for exclusive around-town driving.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!
It's not wise to drive on overdrive everytime. When you are cruising that's when OD should beused.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

My transmission jerks when i drive around 45 miles an hour then it stops but its not a real problem

It is probably "searching" for overdrive. If you are doing in town driving only leave the selector in drive. It should stop searching for overdrive. Once you get to a place that you will exceed 45 put it into od and it will probably shift normally.

I don't exactly know when to turn the overdrive on or off. The owner's manual says to keep in on for normal driving but others across the Net say to only have it on when driving on the interstate or flat...

In town, turn it OFF,the car wont go up and down the gears(3rd and 4th) so much.on the highway turn it on,to lower the engine revs and save gas.
