Brake light does not turn off

The brake light on my dad's 1997 Nissan Sentra stays on. I had to take the fuse off so that the battery would not drain. I tried everything; turning headlights on and off; pumping the brakes; turning signals and hazard lights on and nothing would turn the brake lights off. Thanks for any assistance.

I had the exact series of events happen to my '97 sentra. The cruise control stopped working about one year ago and I didn't bother getting it checked up. The mechanic at the garage attributed it to some "wiring" problem - which was the wrong diagnosis. Last night, I noticed that the brake lights won't turn off even after I switched off the ignition and locked the car. I didn't know what the problem was and I disconnected the tail lights (accessed the wiring from the boot). I got the stoppers from the nissan dealership. I only needed one stopper. It did take some effort putting the stopper in - as I had to crawl under the steering for close to 40 mins until I finally managed to get it in with the help of a pair of pliers. The end result was that the tail lights are functional once again and the best part is - the cruise control is back up again. You guys are awesome - saved me a ton of money and taught me something cool: always google search your car problem before going to the mechanics! Thanks!

Your brake light switch, located on the brake pedal, is either stuck or bad.  You can try to jiggle it to see if it comes loose or just replace it.  It's relatively easy/cheap to take care of.  Let me know if you have any more questions.  That should get your dad fixed up and ready to go! Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!

1997 Nissan sentra. No lights brake/tail/turn signals on the rear section of vehicle. All front lighting works. What could cause this? Wiring diagram would help

1st check the fuse box. The corresponding fuse for that set of lights could be blown. If so, replace it with one of the same voltage.

If its not blown, next check all the light bulbs and terminals to their sockets. (With the light swithed off...checking solder or crimp connectors for breaks or corrosion)

If these are good, it might be a short in the wires to the lights. That is best fixed by a mechanic.

My brake light and battery light stays on when driving. Also emergency brake does not work.

OK, the brake light is caused most likely by the emergency brake cable being broken, and the pedal or brake lever is not in position.

Also, the brake light could be caused by low brake fluid level. Check that, too.

Battery light, is caused by the charging system not working, like a bad alternator or shorted out battery, or both.

I would have these issues repaired before driving any distance.

Brake light stays on

the switch for your brake lights is located near your brake pedal,it is usually a spring loaded switch that comes out when the pedal is pushed & the pedal pushes it back in when it is released, this switch may have come loose & is active all the time, you need to make sure that it is pushed hard up against the brake pedal & tighten the adjusting screws to lock it in position, check that your stop lights come on when the brake pedal is pushed in....hope this helps....cheers

97 nissan sentra with brake and battery light staying lit after changing battery. when it goes into passing gear light goes off then comes back on

These lights will come on if your alternator isn't charging fully. With a multi meter test your voltage at the battery with the engine running. The voltage should be above 14 volts. If it is below 14 you will need to replace the alternator.

My dash taillights dont work on my 1997 nissan

Turn on the hazard switch to check if the bulbs light up. If they do, the problem is probably with the headlight switch itself.

1995 Nissan Sentra, The engine light and brake

You could have faulty altenator or short causing the battery to drain. The engine light usually comes on when anything electrical or sensor wise is faulty. Brake light will come on if, low brake fluid, e-brake handle is up.
