Replaced the starter about two months ago and it was starting up fine every time till about a few weeks ago. Now about 25% of the time it will start up but i will be stranded unless i park on a hill or have someone to jump me. battery is fine as the radio/lights/dash still work. horn does not work though.

battery was recently tested, they said it was fine, we just cleaned the cables. and the noise is a clicking sound. We got the starter from kragen i believe.

You may need to pull the starter, alot of times when they remanufacture a starter they just do a basic test on the solenoid and if it checks they don't replace it.Toyota starters use a bell shaped copper contact that is prone to wear and corrosion,I drive a Toyota myself and had this exact problem.

The horn is a separate issue, The starter, where was it bought? It could be the starter even though it is new. You want to check all of the electrical connections. If any of them are loose or damaged that could be causing your issue to. The only other thing could be a faulty ignition switch. But you will need to get into it and try to diagnose what is causing the no start.

Can you pin point the source of the click? If you can either remove the starter and bench test it or leave it in the vehicle and and jump or by-pass the ignition switch. Try to start the starter, if it starts at the starter but not at the ignition switch then there could be a broken wire, bad starter relay or faulty ignition switch. If you can not get the starter to work, at the starter then either you dont have a good electrical connection or the new starter is defective.

Anti-theft system has nothing to do with it . Battery cables , maybe , Park neutral safety switch possibly ! With anti-theft system problem you wouldn't a click or anything , that is if the anti-theft disables fuel or the starter . Plus the SECURITY light would be on if it were a anti-theft system problem . Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop that knows how to do starter circuit testing >
Starter Voltage Drop
How to voltage drop test starter motor circuit

And what's this identity anti theft system ? No such thing ! The vehicle has a content theft an vehicle theft deterrent system !
This system disables fuel not cranking of the engine. The VCM/PCM will not disable the fuel due to any BCM message for the remainder of the ignition cycle.
If the VCM/PCM does not receive the same password from the BCM as the last learned one, the vehicle will start and then stalls due to the Fuel Lockout.

l could suggest you to check your engine thermostat if is working. if it is found defective, replace. some say, yes, could be the head gasket. it causes also of overheating. but smoke you notice at the tail end, could be you have broken valve seal and eats up the oil. this another problem makes the engine's overheating. the 25 old old engine really need an overhaul.

the remote starter is not going to damage the starter, but if wired wrong it could damage the wiring or fuses, or run the battery down from a short.

Starting problem

Hello LostLynne.
The most common issue is a bad contact in the starter solenoid.
This solenoid is part of the starter assembly and makes the high amperage battery to starter connection
When you hear the click the solenoid is activating but not completing the battery to starter contact.
If this is an original starter or been on for a long time I would suggest changing the starter assembly.
Also in your under hood fuse/relay panel there is a smaller relay that activates the starter solenoid that should be checked before replacing the starter. Although less common for that to happen it does occasionally cause a problem. Easy to replace too.
If you have further questions please ask me.
