Danger of bent valve and difficulty of replacement with broken timing chain

I was excellerating after exiting an interstate exit and my car just started dying and seem to have lost power so I popped the clutch twice and it continued to die and come to a stop. I towed the car home and I was told it sounded like the timing chain broke by the person riding with me. I pulled the cover off of the timing chain and sure enough the timing chain broke. I can not afford a mechanic and I absolutely love my car and have no back up car. I was told there was a chance that I could have bent a valve and as stated before I can not afford a mechanic to do a 400+ job just to be told I need more work done. my question is it hard to do this job by a shade tree lol. and I also was wondering how much of a chance is there that I did bend a valve? I have a 1998 Mitsubishi eclipse rs. 2.0 litre engine.

Do I have to send it to a machine shop to find out if the valves are bent or can you tell just by pulling the head or valve covers ?

Dealing with timing chains its harder then timing belts i mean if you have the right tools it can be done but it can be pretty difficult when dealing with the timing , and the chance of a bent valves it depends if you have a 2.0L DOHC there is definatelly a pretty good chance that u might have valve or piston damage, if you have 2.0 SOHC u wont have damage at all

If your car was running, you bent valves. eclipses are the worst with that.

Timing chain noise

The chain, gear teeth or possibly a tensioner could be going bad (worn teeth or tensioner, stretched chain).. you need to replace whatever before the timing slips and valves are bent/broken.

Why 1991 mitsubishi mighty max has no injector pulse 2.4 engine?

The problem may be a cam/crank position sensor that is causing this. Check that the cam shaft is turning ( broken timing belt/chain)

Does a broken timing belt automatically mean bent vales?

No you don't always bend valves typically with 4 or 6 cylinder engines are equiped with free floating engines that when the chains or belts break it allows the engine from creating greater damage to other parts of your engine

Timing chain the tension of the timing chan is broken

2.7L V6 engine? OK. is the chain broken or the tensioner not taking up
the slack? chain ok, just replace the tensioner, right side of engine, below
front of cylinder head. if it is the chain that broken, take it to a repair shop,
this will be and expensive fix, bent valves.
GOOD LUCK, RDJRP.

My sis-n-law's L200 stalled on the interstate a couple of nights ago. She couldn't give it gas or anything and coasted to the shoulder of the road. She said there were no sounds, just a dead car. After...

possibly a broken or very loose timing chain,,,it usually doesnt make any sound, the tensioner for the timing chain probably lost oil supply ,oil pressure to it and slacked up the chain causing it to jump or break from the low oil or just bad luck on a bad part, but if it did jump time or break the chain itmore than likely bent the valves in the cylinder head,,youll need a new or used head as the valve guide could be damaged and its cheaper to replace the head,,the bottom end of the engine is ok,,,,but check compression, and it should be 170 plus and all about even no more than 15 psi difference across the cylinders,if it is a low compression reading youll have to remove the clyinder and check the valves,,common on the 4 clyinder L200

Check the Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) or the idle position sensor (IPS). They are located near the fuel system.

Car stalled at stop and won't start.

if the vehicle did cut of and if the timing belt is broken chances are you have damaged the valves in the head, the 1.9 engines are famous for it, however i would first install the timing bel and a water pump properly and try starting the car if it starts make sure it is running smooth if it runs rough, or if it fails to stop, you definately have bent valves usually all the exhaust valves and if this be the cse the heaad has to be worked on in a machine shop
