Question about 1990 Toyota 4Runner

1 Answer

Power Issue? Engine idles fine but has a flat spot when you give it gas- either in park or while driving. I have had a full tune-up, timing was OK ,new plugs ,rotor ,cap, wires , I was told that it may be fuel injector(s) because it seemed to have a better response when starting fluid was sprayed directly into the intake while running could this be the cause this vehicle has a little over 115K and is in good condition otherwise!

Check your throtle possiton sensor. it controls the amount of gas given to the engine when you push the pedal. i had the same problem. its located right behind the throtle body and connected by 2 screws. its adjustable so tinker with it and if it needs replaced its about 100 bucks

Truck starts and runs in park but when you put it in gear it stalls and when in park it has a dead spot when you give it gas

Sounds like your throttle position sensor is gone. The throttle position sensor is a sensor that tell the computer how much gas to give the engine. I had a very similar issue with a car i had where it would be ok when it was cold or idling but when i took off from a red light after it warmed up it would just stall.

1986 caddy sedan deville fleetwood with just under 100K miles ... not sure if it's gas or oxygen sensor, or something else entirely ... but I noticed the average gas mileage indicator is down from 14.5...

try cleaning the MAF sensor located on the air intake, be sure to use only MAF sensor cleaner it can be purchased at just about any autoparts store. do not let some idiot talk you into using carb cleaner on it. the filaments that detect the air flow and very fragile so do not touch just spray the cleaner on them no need to wipe it off or anything. the MAF sensor can cause similar problems to what you have described. it also measures barometric pressure and detects moisture in the air so if these problems are happening when it is very humid or raining it is definitely a possibility that this is your problem.

Car acts like its loosing power when i give it gas to drive

Call ahead and then go to a local autoparts chain. Verify that they can read your OBD1 code. Most can only read 96 and newer OBDII. It may be worth paying the diagnstic fee at a Nissan dealer to find out what your code is. The codes are system specific and take the guesswork out of emissions system diagnosis. Consider this: When was the last time you had a tune up? Worn and out of spec gaps on your spark plugs can diminish performance, yet the car will idle fine without a load on the engine.
