    why yes u do, it is called a harmonic balancer puller.

I would recommend using an impact wrench. It not only will break the nut loose without turning the engine over, but the impaction will usually break the balancer loose of the crankshaft.

If u are replacing the water pump u dont need to remove the harmonic balacer

    sorry i was thinkin another name i was thinkin bout crankshaft pulley . . n when i replaced the water pump on my integra i used an impact gun and it worked just fine

    but careful wen removing the pulley if u break the bolt u will have a hard time gettin the broken piece out

try useing an air impact gun the vibration from the gun usally vibrates them off good luck

there is a special harmonic balancer puller (and i do mean special) don't use a regular one or you will messup the harmonic balancer you can rent the tool at autozone it's free rental,,, they charge you for the tool but you get your money back when you return the tool works great

Crankshaft Position Sensor and Camshaft Position Sensor


  1. Serpentine belt from the crankshaft pulley.
  2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  3. Right front tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Right inner fender access cover.
  5. Using a 28 mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.
  6. Crankshaft harmonic balancer using tool J 38192 or equivalent.
  7. Sensor electrical connector.
  8. Foreign object deflector.
  9. Sensor and pedestal from block face.
  10. Sensor from pedestal.

  1. Loosely install the crankshaft sensor on the pedestal.
  2. Position the sensor with pedestal attached on special Tool J 37089.
  3. Position the special tool on the crankshaft.
  4. Bolts to hold the pedestal to the block face, torque to 20-40 Nm (14-28 lb.ft).
  5. Torque the pedestal pinch bolt to 3-4 Nm (38-40
  6. Remove special tool J 37089.
  7. Place the special tool 37089 on the harmonic balancer and turn. If any vane of the harmonic balancer touches the tool, replace the balancer assembly.
  8. Balancer on the crankshaft.
    • Apply thread sealer (GM 1052080) or equivalent to the threads of the balancer bolt.
  1. Torque the crankshaft bolt to 140 Nm + 56°(104 lb.ft + 56°).
  2. Foreign object deflector.
  3. Electrical connector.
  4. Inner fender shield.
  5. Tire and wheel assembly, torque to 140 Nm (104 lb.ft).
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Serpentine belt.

not really special, but, you need a harmonic balancer pulley removing tool...Lots of larger parts store either loan them out or rent them. (if you buy one you may get to use it again in five years,unless you are a tech.) Why are you taking it off?

You need a special tool to hold the harmonic balancer with while you break the center bolt loose. Once loose, should wiggle off.

you def will not be able to drive the vehicle with no balancer due to the fact that is the main source that runs all your belts...all you should need is a harmonic balancer pulley remover..

How do I replace the distributor

This is a very involved repair. The distributor is located on the front of the motor between the waterpump and the harmonic balancer. the Waterpump ,and anything else in the way will have to be removed. An experienced mechanic with the proper tools and a lift will require at least 4 hours to complete.
