I had a mechanic put on a timing belt for a 99 ford contour and now it won't go into gear. He says he can get it up to 2500 rpms but when he puts it into gear it dies. He said it was the variable timing control unit and that he checked the belt thirty times to make sure it was not off a tooth, which he got pretty offended when I asked him. I don't plan on taking my car to him ever again. I just don't think that it makes sense that if my timing belt breaks that also my variable timing control could break. I did some research and saw that it could be the torque converter. My hunch is he didn't do the timing belt right even though he insists he checked it 30 times and he has been a mechanic for 41 years. Now he wants my title to junk it. Need some advice on what could be wrong. Thanks, Dain
SOURCE: Do timing belts in 1994 Ford Escorts ever need replacing?
No they are not. The reason your manual does not saying anything about replacing the timing belt is because 9 times out of 10 most people do not know how to replace the timing belt and make sure that it is on properly and the timing is correct. Also the time belt should be changed around 115,000 miles. But it is never bad to go ahead and get it done if they already did it or are going to

let them re install it ,
I think it is one tooth backwards.
you need to do a timing test with a dynamo dyno lap top computer hooked up to the engine computer. the dealership for ford will do it let them know.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the feedback! I questioned the mechanic as to the chances of the belt being off slightly. You can guess what the answer was..best regards"

If you 2000 Dodge Stratus is equipped with either the 2.0 Liter (SOHC) 4 cylinder engine or the 2.5 Liter (SOHC) V6 then you have serious engine damage. Both these engines are interference engines. When the belt breaks the pistons will make contact with the valves thus causing damage. The belt on the 4 cylinder should have been replaced at 100,000 miles. The belt on the V6 should have been replaced at 60,00 miles. At 60 mph you for sure are going to have some damage. How much damage, you will know when they open it up.

Your local Napa store can print you out a routing diagram, but first check around under your hood, most cars have a routing sticker.
