Mechanic Put on Timing Belt now won't go into gear

I had a mechanic put on a timing belt for a 99 ford contour and now it won't go into gear. He says he can get it up to 2500 rpms but when he puts it into gear it dies. He said it was the variable timing control unit and that he checked the belt thirty times to make sure it was not off a tooth, which he got pretty offended when I asked him. I don't plan on taking my car to him ever again. I just don't think that it makes sense that if my timing belt breaks that also my variable timing control could break. I did some research and saw that it could be the torque converter. My hunch is he didn't do the timing belt right even though he insists he checked it 30 times and he has been a mechanic for 41 years. Now he wants my title to junk it. Need some advice on what could be wrong. Thanks, Dain

SOURCE: Do timing belts in 1994 Ford Escorts ever need replacing?

No they are not. The reason your manual does not saying anything about replacing the timing belt is because 9 times out of 10 most people do not know how to replace the timing belt and make sure that it is on properly and the timing is correct. Also the time belt should be changed around 115,000 miles. But it is never bad to go ahead and get it done if they already did it or are going to

SOURCE: The timing belt on my '99 Contour just broke. I

let them re install it ,
I think it is one tooth backwards.
you need to do a timing test with a dynamo dyno lap top computer hooked up to the engine computer. the dealership for ford will do it let them know.

SOURCE: Bronken Timing belt. Could this have damaged other things in car

If you 2000 Dodge Stratus is equipped with either the 2.0 Liter (SOHC) 4 cylinder engine or the 2.5 Liter (SOHC) V6 then you have serious engine damage. Both these engines are interference engines. When the belt breaks the pistons will make contact with the valves thus causing damage. The belt on the 4 cylinder should have been replaced at 100,000 miles. The belt on the V6 should have been replaced at 60,00 miles. At 60 mph you for sure are going to have some damage. How much damage, you will know when they open it up.

Your local Napa store can print you out a routing diagram, but first check around under your hood, most cars have a routing sticker.

Mechanic put on Timing Belt and now won't go into gear on 99 ford Contour

I would ask the mechanic if you can get a second opinion. It doesn't matter if he has 1000 years experience. He is human and makes mistakes just like all the rest of us. If he doesn't like it give him the money for the repair and take it to another mechanic. If the first mechanic is wrong then sue him.

1996 ford contour needs to be recalled. Dome lite and brake lites stay on when door is closed causing battery to drain prematurely.

If the experts told Dan to get rid of the car, then I am in total agreement !
I walked into a Ford garage a few years back to get some advice on a friend's Contour I was putting a timing belt on. I talked for a bit with a mechanic there, and it seemed all the ford mechanics there were pretty much in agreement that the Ford Contour was one poorly designed and executed product that they'd rather not see come in their shop. Expensive to repair and often made the owners mad from all the hassle.

Attend to one of the door switches for the dome light, and see if the brake switch on the brake pedal can be adjusted. IDK, do these models have a body control module? I hope not for your sake. (Trade it off!)

1996 ford contour...lights work on dashboard; belts turning; tries to start but won't turn over

Someone will need to figure out if you are lacking fuel to the injectors, spark to the plugs, or if you have a mechanical problem with the engine such as a faulty timing belt.

Had water pump replaced on a 99 ,trying to see w hats malfunctioning has new plugs ,wireboots ,coils and may be timing belt as mechanic sais looks loosemissingteeth or something... l sputtering ,jerking...

Maybe find a better mechanic, because you car doesn't have a timing belt. Did you have this problem before the water pump was replaced? What engine do you have? He may be able to check IAC operation and crank sensor. Fuel pressure verified good?

Timing belt broke. Open the oil fill cap and crank, if you don't see the valve lifters moving, then the timing belt has definately broken.

Ford contour

Check your timing belt by carefully removing the timing belt pulley cover to the left of the valve cover. The valve cover houses the spark plugs. You should be able to flash a flashlight down and see your timing belt. Most likely, you have a timing belt going, or a shaving stuck in your VCT solenoid. I'm guessing the belt is worn and has slipped a tooth or two. I would take caution driving it as it's been disputed that it could be an interference engine, and you could do serious damage to your vehicle.
