Just wanted to update. After checking and filing all the ground wires. Decided to go back and check all the fuses. Granted they were all in the there nice and tight. Noticed that there was a YELLOW fuse in there..Wrong amp fuse in the right headlight. To high of amp makes a headlight go dim. Changed it to the correct amp. YES WE HAVE A WORKING HEADLIGHT. thanks

did all that, went back and double checked male friends steps and did the grounding and still nothing. went to fuses and double checked those. it had a blue 15 amp in the slot, was suppose to be a red 10 amp. fixed the problem. yeah but now i got a bigger one at hand.

I still think it could be improperly aimed.

  • Samuel Charles Spriggs May 11, 2010

Are you sure the headlight is dimmer or is it just not aimed correctly. If the angle of the lamp is off, even when you are looking right at it, it could appear to be dimmer than the one correctly aimed.

You've got a grounding wire issue on the right side headlight.
trace the wire that goes to ground and make sure the connection is clean and tight... check for corrosion around the wire terminals and in the connector...

Just fixed my Cobalt headlamp that had the same issue. I initially checked the condition of the fuse so determine if it was burned, or its terminal corroded. Next I checked the terminal of the connector that connected to the lamp. I found that the gap at the middle terminal appeared to be too wide, and hypothesized that there was no contact to carry current to the bulb. So with a small screw driver, I pushed the contact at the terminal slightly closer so as to make contact with the bulb terminal. Tested the headlight, and dimness is gone. Why the gap was wider? I don't know. I can't only surmise.

Check for corrosion in the bulb socket or wiring connection points. This could cause a voltage drop, resulting in a dimmer light. If it looks good, then just replace the bulb with a new one. Use dielectric grease only in the bulb socket to prevent corrosion. Do not use regular grease because it will stop electricity from flowing.

You have a bad GROUND going to the dim light. Either the ground wire is broken, not connected or not making contact at the bulb.

I have a very clean 89 Crown Victoria from Florida! An old lady owned it bought brand new! I resently replaced all external lights now when I turn on my lights all my front turn signal lights my dash...

The dimmer switch for the headlights only affect the headlights. The dimmer control for the dash lights only affect the dash lights.
So if the parking lights are going off too, I would say its the headlight switch. Thats about the only thing that involves all three circuits.
It could also be the harness plug at the headlight switch.
BTW - the turn signal lights are another circuit from the parking lights.

I have a 1984 dodge 4x4 1/2 ton. the headlights dont work just the running lights work when i pull the light switch out. i bought new headlights nothing

some times when the dimmer switch on the floor goes bad the headlights will cut out. Try replacing the dimmer switch and the headlights should come back on. My 84 dodge had that exact problem.
