Question about 2002 Mazda Protege
How much should I reasonably pay to replace the Timing belt in my 2002 Mazda Protege 5? Note: mazda has two recommendations for changing your timing belt- one is for 105,000 miles the other is 60,000 miles. I tried asking a local mechanic why the change and he was not completely sure himself. His best answer was the climate zones for certain states required a shorter interval, due to wear and tear. Any other answers out there
They are good for well over 100k. If your engine is freewheeling (that is - if belt does break, no valve will hit the psiton), I would just keep driving it until it breaks or never does.
I am driving my 93 Villager until it breaks. over 150k right now, freewheeling engine.
As for cost, about $400 is my guess.
Ask your dealer service dept if it's freewheeling. check your owner manual too.
