Car has little acceleration after driving awhile

After driving for awhile (vehicle is warmed up) my 2001 Isuzu Rodeo has little power; especially going up hill. I have the gas pedal all the way down and the vehicle sounds like it is barely going to 'go.'

  • julieta_barr May 28, 2009

Rogerf1...the mechanic called and said it is the powertrain. I just see $$$. He said it is not the catalytic converter. Doesn't even want to look a it. Could it be the powertrain?

Hello julieta_barr: My name is Roger and I will help you. If this happens after the engine warms up and the engine runs fine cold. I would look at the catalytic converter as the problem. When the converter is damaged the engine can run great cold. As the engine warms up a bad converter will close off and choke the exhaust down. Top speed will drop off dramatically. I would also replace the fuel filter as this could cause a problem. The converter can be checked but you need the equipment to do it. Should you have any questions please just ask. I will be glad to answer them for you. Please rate the quality of the answer as this is how we know you received the correct answer. Thank You for using FixYa. Roger

Hello julieta_barr: The mass air flow sensor will measure the density of the air being drawn into the engine. Generally will cause the engine to stumble. I would check the engine vacum first. This is a simple test and would answer some questions. If the mass air flo sensor is bad it should set a code with in the computer system. Has your mechanic done a computer test. if so what codes did he retrieve. The computer components for this or any vehicle are expensive and should not be replaced just to buy them. Have the system tested first.I am not saying your mass air flo sensor is not bad. What I am saying make sure the part you replace is the correct part. You should always check the basics first. You own the car. Your mechanic should take your wishes into consideration. Just because you are a female judging by your name. You should be treated as the one paying the bill. I will be glad to help if i can Roger

Hi again julieta_barr: What in the power train is he saying the problem is? Does the RPM's go up and the car slows down or does the engine bog down and the car slows down? Roger

What makes the reduced power light come on?

the "brain" of the car has detected a problem and is reducing the power available (limp home mode), get it to a garage and have them scan the odb2 data (or get a odb2 scanner and do it yourself. it will provide a fault code) the fault code will tell why it went to reduced power mode (limp home)

Why is my2002 isuzu sputtering while accelerating

I own a 2001 IZUZU Rodeo which had the same problem. I chose to ignore this and keep on driving. This was a "bad mistake". Apparently I had been buying dirty fuel. The fuel filter was nearly blocked, the fuel pump had been damaged and a Tank Flush was required. This all meant $$$. Take your vehicle to a "RELIABLE" mechanic.

When I'm warming my car up (2004 Izuzu Rodeo) the power door locks lock the vehicle after a few minutes. No one is in or near the car.

You might have an electrical short in the power lock system. How does it lock do you need to press one of the locks to lock to whole vehicle?

How to check transmission fluid on 2001 isuzu rodeo?

Easier done on a lift, but you need to start the vehicle and let it warm up and then remove the fill plug not yhr drain plug, (with the vehicle running) the plug will be found on the transmission pan but it is NOT the one on the very bottom of the pan, there is another plug up in the corner of the pan on the passenger side. Remove this plug carefully, for the fluid will be warm to hot, if a little runs out of the hole your ok, if nothing comes out with the plug completely removed you need to add a little at a time thru this hole until it runs back out. DO NOT SHUT THE ENGINE OFF WITH THIS PLUG OUT, fluid will run out if you do.

To get fluid in the hole, attach a small hose to a filler top off of a gear oil bottle and put that top on your tranny fluid bottle, turn it upside and squeeze the fluid in using the hose to get it into the pan. If you have a fluid pump it would be better but if not this will work.
