If I remember correctly, the rubber boot around the cable where it goes into the wall is part of the cable and that needs to come out too...If you are trying to slide cable through it it will not happen.

How can I get to the coil pack on a 1997 pontiac sunfire?

They're at the back towards the firewall side of the engine below the intake. Use a socket with a screw driver type attachment. Change them one at a time because they are mounted on a plate that will just fall off if you remove them both. It's a real b@#ch to get it back on. switch the plug wires one at a time. Don't pull them both off. It's easy to make a mistake and get them out of order.
Good luck.

1997 pontiac sunfire manual transmission won't shift out of gear.

What you can try is to remove the shift cables from the transmission side. then move the shifter and see if everything is free if it's still sticks then the cables are going to be replaced. if everything is moving with the cable off. then you need to remove the shift tower on the tranny (where the shift cable is I belive it's 5 bolts) remove the tower and you will see the shift pin. Inside the tower there is a cotter pin that breaks and that will cause you to have one gear and unable to selected another gear. If you are not mech inclined I would no attemped the shift tower repaire, the cables do it will save you money. The shift tower has bushings that can fall into the tranny.

If you are unable to do it yourself, you may want to take it to a repair shop and have them pull off the rear drums and make sure none of the hardware (springs, clips, etc.) have come loose and are dragging inside the drum. Hope this helps.
