I will check for a spark as you both recommended. I was suprised when this happened because the car started fine this morning. My wife started it, then we shut it off for a minute to run back in the house, then it wouldn't start again. Strange.

Thanks for the suggestions,...I'll keep you posted.

There are three things that make a engine run. Fuel, Fire, and Compression. If you take any one of these away, no engine will run. First check your spark. By the way, THESE ARE SHADE TREE MECHANIC WAYS OF DOING THINGS. Unless you have alot of money for test equipment I would try these. Remove a sparg plug wire, insert a screwdriver into the end, set the screwdriver blade close to a ground, but dont touch it to metal, have someone crank the engine and see if you have a nice blue/white spark. If you dont, then thats where you problem is. If you do, see if some one has a compression gauge(AutoZone loans these tools, Deposit required. Check online to see what the compression is supposed to be. Check each cylinder and write the results down. Eack cylinder should be close to the recommend pressure. It varies from cylinder to cylinder. If you have alot of diffrences in compression, you possible may have blown a head gasket. If they are close to each other, then check for fuel probblems. To keep you safe and to protect my self, I would get a fuel pressure tester from AutoZone also. The tester will come with instructions. Good luck.

THE TOYOTA GARAGE SAY THAT I NEED TWO OIL SEALS IN THE FRONT OF MY CRANK FOR A TOYOTA LAND CRUISER 2001 4.2 D. I HAVE GOT A OIL LEAK ON THE BACK OF THE CRANK PULLEY. 2 . WHAT CAN HAPPEN IF YOU DRIVE...

The damper pulley, on the end of the crank is what drives the belts for pretty much everything else. the engine will overheat, the alternator wont charge, the power steering wont work, the air con wont work,
the back of the pulley has a machined surface that runs inside the front crank seal.
Is there a reason not to believe the toyota mechanic, or did it seem expensive?
The front damper pulley (harmonic balancer) can be $100 or more plus the seal and I believe the radiator needs to come out to complete the job

1999 landcruiser has intermittent starting problems. Sometimes it starts fine. Other times turns over once then nothing. Other times clicks but no turn-over. Other times no click, no start. Battery is good...

I had a similar problem with my landcruiser sometimes it would start no probs at all and other times it would start to crank and then stop and you had to try a couple of times to start it. It ended up being the starter motor contacts failing.
Just another thing to look at
