Question about 2004 Lincoln Town Car

Fuel smell on startup

I get a fuel odor when I start the car. It disappears quickly, but can return at random times such as a U-turn, quick stop, or backing up. The dealer has put dye in the tank and checked for leaking. No apparent leaks. Could it be the fuel vapor canister?

I smell gas

Sound like it could be quite a few things. Off the top of my head I would check that the car is firing on all cylinders. If one has gone down you will have fuel travelling along the exhaust pipe, which could explain the smell. If you have lost a cylinder it will be as rough as a badgers B*M, and you will get rubbish mpg. Check if you can smell fuel from the exhaust pipe (Not while the car is running I don't want you to get carbon monoxide poisoning), just give it a quick start and a few revs first. If it is or anyway If you take the plugs out one at a time look at them to see if they are wet and smell of fuel, (After a quick start and a rev). Check your air filter as well you could even take it out and see how it runs (Not for long just a quick blast) see how you go with that.
Good Luck

I have a 2001 chevy malibu ls when i start it up in the mornings and turn on the heat to get it warm inside i smell the odor of gas what could be the problem

Obviously a fuel leak under the hood. When you turn on the heater blower, it is sucking in the odor into the car. COULD BE A FIRE HAZARD... The fuel leak could be coming from a number of places. Do a quick check - - Open the hood. Have someone start the car and then look for any leaks. They are kind of hard to see as gasoline evaporates quickly. Run a for a minute or so, shut it off and continue to look for leaks. The fuel system will remain pressurized even after the car is turned off.
Good Luck.

Strong smell of gas on cold startup

I have a 2002 Impala, and on cold days on the first start of the day had strong fuel smell. I troubleshot the problem to the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail was leaking around the seams. I replaced the regulator and have had no problems since. Hope this helps.

Engine knocks when startup but disappears after engine warms up.....could the oil pump be defective.......what about the knock sensor....

Its probably lifter noise, check what grade of oil is in the car or change it to a slightly thicker grade,i would expect that the car has a lot of mileage on it,if the oil light goes out quickly on the dash when starting its not the oil pump(very uncommon),knock sensor is for ignition timing to stop pinging, nothing to do with your noise, generally its engine wear
