Question about 1999 Honda Odyssey

2 Answers

1999 Honda Odyssey engine stops when driving.

The car suddenly stops when driving under diverse conditions such as weather, acceleration, etc. After pulling over (which is quite a job as the power steering is out) and placing the car in park it always cranks immediately and runs fine until it happens again.

When it runs, it runs well - idles smoothly, adequate pickup, etc. I have checked all the fuses and that is about as far as I got. Long ago I would have said it was a bad coil since this used to happen on cars long ago but I don't think this car has a coil as such.

Any help is well appreciated.

If it has it has not been recently. I can't remember it ever being jump
started but it may have at some point. It was not an immediate to the
symptom occurring the first time however.
It seems it initially happened very sporadically, say once every month
starting in March. The frequency has increased now to one time every
two weeks on average, It has on one occassion happened twice in one
day. The car is driven daily for 25 to 50 miles. Since my 101 pound
fiancee drives the car with her children it is a dangerous problem and
as many, we are in a financial pinch. I guess we will have to pay
someone at some point to look at it for a diagnosis if we can't come up
    with a solution.

At this point I have looked on the recall
website and did see where there have been problems with the ignition
system that might cause this. I was also thinking fuel filter but in
this car you have to replace the pump as well and I do not want to do
that without some more evidence that this is causing it. I am thinking
electrical since it happens so suddenly and then always cranks after
pulling (rolling to) to a stop and placing in park. Maybe even a
    transmission relay?

Again, thanks for any help you might provide.

It is now fixed. A new ignition switch cured the problem

  • Bob Broadfoot Sep 17, 2009

It is now fixed. No codes came up because it was a bad ignition switch. The mechanic at the Honda dealership said that the computer thinks it is just being turned off thus no code.

Replace switch several months ago and no more problems.

Is the check engine light on? If so or if not, you should still get the "codes read" with a diagnostic trouble code scanner. Many auto parts stores will do this for free. There are probably some codes latched into the computer's memory as "pending codes". Bad stuff has happened but hasn't happened at a rate the computer thinks is significant enough to turn on the check engine light. Still, the computer will keep track of these codes. These codes are the place to start the diagnosis. Depending on the scanner, you may also get "freeze frame data" which is a recording of engine parameters at the exact moment the problem occurred. This would be very helpful in pinpointing the problem.

Replace the ignition switch. Honda had a recall on this, but my experience is that the new ones will fail too with age.

Check out if the fuel pump is working properly, take out the outlet pipe for fuel then turn the key to start the engine to see if the fuel is going out to the end of the pipe properly

Your vehicle may be part of a 2002 honda/acura recall. Faulty ignition switch!! Typical symptoms are: Random stalls, hard start, no spark, power loss (symptoms progress in hotter weather). When the vehicle stalls/shuts off while in motion, usually the speedometer drops to "0" while in motion. Some warning light not lit when ignition is set to "on" (chk engine/ABS/Brake etc.). Call your local dealer with your VIN# on hand and check if your vehicle is part of the recall. Refer to faulty ignition switches, affected years (1998-2002 models), accords/preludes/pilot/Odyssey/Civic/CR-V and various Acura models.
