Question about 2000 Jaguar S-Type

2 Answers

Gearbox Fault My gearbox light came on after I had a coolant flush on my 2003-S type jaguar. My care is driving beautifully, yet my Jaguar dealer said I need a new transmission-to the tune of 5,800.00. Could it possibly be anything else? It was also suggested by a non-jaguar mechanic that it could be corrected by changing out the torque converter. That would cost about 2,500.00. What to do?

    Hi,

Are you suggesting that I change my transmission not the torque converter or both? I also noticed the gearbox fault light comes on when I am climbing a hill or any kind of incline. Does this problem suggest a the transmission problem more than a torque converter problem?

I would like a third option, I have already checked with my auto mechanic and I am not sure if he is correct. Firstly, he said they do not fix transmissions, they can only replace transmissions. I am wondering if there are any mechanics out there that know how to fix a transmission, or is it always better to replace. My car has 75,000.00 miles.

Thankyou for your verifying the mechanics suggestion, that is what I needed to hear.

OK, due to the mechanical build of this type of electronically controlled torque/gearbox pack, the above recommendation given by the jaguar tech are unfortunately true. This transmission build is very sophisticated in its design. You stated you get the Gear box light when driving up a incline or during driving actions. This is common gear pack damaged and the gears are striping. this will destroy the torque converter and create massive gear pack ware. Jaguar dose not rebuild this type of transmission. it will require a total replacement of the transmission at this moment.

It is possible to replace the torque converter but, the gear pack will still be an issue and , it will destroy a newly installed torque convert, I understand the enormous price for this total transmission replacement is staggering but, it is necessary in this case. replacing the torque converter will only delay the inevitable.

HI there,

Definitely better to trust your car dealer about their diagnosis. the car computer need to be check by your dealer and it better to send it to them for further check up and replacing of the faulty transmission.

this could be a transmission problem, as you said that there was error appearing on your car when you try to climb uphill. your shop dealer will check your car first before doing a replacement, so it be good that you send your car to them for further check up.

if it is a jatco 5 speed box it needs rebuilding or replacing. rubbish gearbox, but double check selector cable adjustment first.try using a fault code reader to check dtc codes in the tcm,[transmission control module] was the fluid clean that you drained out? or did it look dark instead of crimson and smell burnt? did you check the level with the fluid temp between 30c and 50c the correct procedure if not followed and you get it wrong can make a big difference to gearbox performance, but it sounds like the box is on its way out have.worked on these cars since day one.

Jaguar s type 03 gearbox fault warning light on dashboard, gear stuck in 4, reverse engages ok, what could it be?

sounds like it is in get you home because of gearbox failure if its the early box with metal sump check selector cable adjustment it critical as the J gate micro switches and the linear switch on the side of the gearbox have to be in sync with each other. on the other hand if it is the later gearbox with plastic sump, which i suspect it will be, check it has not lost some of its oil due to leaking sump, common problem! other wise check fault codes in transmission control module, any codes relating to incorrect gear ratio means internal falure most times

You must have the dealer scan the system with a special tool and based on what is read with the scanner diagnose the problem.

Does a jaguar gearbox fault indicate transmission fluid needs to be changed or that it is low?

it doesnt indicate that it needs a tranny flush thats for sure ,could need topping up though ,try disconnecting the battery both terminals and joining them together for a few minutes to see if it clears the fault ,if it but light comes on when driven then return vehicle to a jaguar dealer as it could be a computer fault and the software is encrypted so its a dealer only diagnostic machine ,Sorry to disappoint you here with no quick and easy answer ,The best models of this car are the diesel turbo with manual transmission ,now these cars do hold their value here in spain

Forward push while stopping Jaguar S-Type 2005 model.

This is sometimes called the lurch, disconnect the battery for 30 mins to re-set the "memory" in the gearbox, this should solve your problem, the gearbox will re-learn your driving style. Make sure you have your radio code before you disconnect.

Jaguar X SE 2.5 gearbox problem

hey johnhoile,

Sorry to break the bad new to you, put you most likely need a transmission depending on what codes are stored in the system. I have dont numerous automatic transmission on x-types all they all started with a gear box fault light on.

If the codes have something to do with a incorrect gear ration that is a guarantee red flag for a new transmission
