Question about 1995 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

Car won't start

I have new battery in this vehicle which I recently purchased used. The car would start, but over the course of a few days it now will not turn over. The dash battery lights still come on without fade. I am guessing it could be a clogged catalytic converter, although, it is uncommon for this to prevent the car from starting. I don't think it is the alternator, because no scratching noise is made when I try to turn it over. It does nothing, not movement with the vehicle trying to start. It might be the starter, but again not sure. It just sits there with the dash lights indicators coming on.

A catalytic converter is not going to cause the car not to start if its clogged it might cause loss of power wen running, if the starter was failing u can hear a clicking noise tryin to start it that can indicate that it might be stuck or probably failing, check if u getting spark also

have the battery load tested as there is no guaranteed service life for batteries ( that is why you get a warranty period )
next have the charging system checked by an accredited auto electrician ( alternator , voltage regulator and drive belt tension and possible current leakage from failed relay or wiring problems )

You need to run a parasitic drain test with a multimeter. Disconnect the vehicle battery positive terminal and connect the multimeter in series between the battery positive terminal and lead. the multimeter should be set to display amps. With all systems turned off, the keys out of the ignition and all doors closed, alarm off and any hood/bonnet switch depressed then after 20 minutes the amp reading should be around 0.03 or less. If you have more than 0.05 then you may have a parasitic drain, causing a n accelerated loss in battery power. In this case, using the same setup then pull fuses one by one from the fusebox until your amps drop down to the normal range. The fuse you pull which causes the range to drop to normal represents the system which is at fault.
The most common causes of parasitic drain from my experience tend to nearly always be failed back up batteries in alarm siren modules or badly wired or faulty stereos. Those are the two systems I'd pay particular attention to.
Of course it may be a simple human fault like you left your trunk/boot light or interior light on.

MY CHRYSLER CONCORDE STARTS AND RUNS A MINUTE THEN SHUTS DOWN EVERY TIME YOU START IT IT SHUTS DOWN I PURCHASED ANEW BATTERY IT DOES THE SAME THING

IF the car turns over and then starts, the battery is not the problem. Did you recently get a new car key made? If you have a key with a code in it, the dealer will have to reload/program this code specific to your vehicle. This is of course for security. If someone tries to hotwire your car, then it will start but is designed to shut off in around a minute...

1998 Honda Accord Won't Start

Park neutral safety switch maybe be the reason for the no crank ! Try putting the vehicle in park ,then try to crank the engine . Testing the electrical circuit is the best way to trouble shoot this problem , along with do a voltage drop test on the starter circuit ! This will test the battery cables an connections .
Starter Voltage Drop
How to voltage drop test starter motor circuit
Does it have a manual or automatic transmission ? Manual ? clutch switch . Looking at a wiring diagram I also see a starter cut relay !
http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Free wiring diagrams . Enter vehicle info. year , make , model and engine size . Under system click engine , under subsystem click starting . Then click the search button , then click the blue link ! Check the starter cut relay also . Videos on youtube showing how to test a relay controlled circuit !

Purchased a new battery for 2003 Infiniti G35 6 weeks ago and went to get in my car tonight after not driving it for two days and now it won't start. What is going on?

Sounds pretty simple. If your starter is not at fault. you may want to check the alternator. If the reason for the battery change originally was due to the battery dying then the alternator could be the culprit.

93 won t start, clicking when i try to start... it started after sitting for a few days than now it won t don t know if its my starter battery or alternator

I would change all three. alittle expensive, but on this old of a vehicle I would not waste time and trouble. if this doesnt work then maybe some ignition problems. But i would guess that battery, starter, alternator, should do the trick
