Question about 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe
My wife has the habit of turning the key quickly when starting the engine and sometimes doesn't let it turn over completely. Lately, if she does this the first time and it won't start, on the next turn of the key, the battery won't have enough power to turn the engine over. This forces me to jump start the vehicle with cables and it'll turn over right away telling me that the battery still has a good charge. I took the battery to an Auto store and they tested it, said it was a good battery. Thinking it was the alternator, I ran the engine and disconnected one of the battery cables, but it keeps running (a good sign that the alternator is good). That's when someone suggested it might be the starter. Could this be a correct diagnosis?
Yes, because the bushings wear out, causing the armature to hit the field under starting load.....dead short. Jumping gives you added amperage allowing the starter to work. (forcing it to work) Buy a new one.
P.S. DON"T RUN YOUR ENGINE WITH THE BATTERY DISCONNECTED!!!!!! You will cook your alternator........zzzzzzzzzzz!
