Question about 1989 Volvo 740

When the fuel gets below 1/2 tank the car starts to cut out during excelaration . I'm guessing there could be a crack in the fuel line that goes into the gas tank and once the fuel gets below a point it starts to **** air.. Any other ideas?? I don't think its a fuel pump issue, because its had this problem for years..

the fuel gauge is working properly , i get over 300 miles to the tank, so the fuel consumption doesn't seem to be being effected . Could it be a leak in the tank pump line that draws air once the fuel gets low???? If the rear pump was bad ,would'nt this happen no matter the fuel level??

will try the gas cap suggestion,,i just put 3 gallons of gas in the car , so i'll need to get it back down to where it starts having the problem again.. i'll let you know in a day or so if it works... Thanks,

Gas cap being loose does'nt seem to be helping.... That would of been too easy of a fix for a VOLVO.... My next step i guess is to pull the rear fuel pump and see if its operating properly or if there are any cracks/holes in its lines.. My wife tells me that when it was installed (by a friend) that there was a kink in the line.. So i'm thinking that maybe that caused a weak spot in the line .. Though
if you have any other suggestions i'd appreciate them.

Fuel pump and furel gauage are seperate cicuits thoug possibly on thr dame unit. The full gauge may be out of calibration And nothing more. If the car runs out of fuel at half tsnk confirm and the fuel pick up is defective both units wikk come out togeter anyway. good luck

The fuel pick up is fully immersed to the lowest point of the fuel tank. Any leakage on the outside or discharge side of the tank woul lose fuel and be obvious because it is under pressure.. If you remove the gas cap when this occurs, Can you here anysound like the tank ha gone into a vacuum? This would make sense being the tank level hs dropped to half way. The cap should have a vacuum release built into it and they sometimes hang up. See how it does if the cap is left loose.under half tank. If itloses the problem, Replace the cap. It will affect your vapor recovery sensors when left loose but. I would like to suggest other things but they won't or don't fit into the picture and one would think the vapor recovery would prevent vacuum. But, lets see with the loose cap thing The car runs fine cruising, correct?

This site has a picture of the common fuel pump for an examole. There may be an application error- wrong part. As you can see, the pick up tuble is at rge srainer Seprndant on thand depth and position. It's pull the pump time and chk the part number and know the tank capacity. The pumps need no bending or adjuments if it the correct part.. If one of the metal lines was kinked it cannot be sraintend without possibly cracking thr kine at the kink, If it was at the half tan level, theres you problem. good luck

You have an bad intank fuel pump,or prepump. Will good if pass an 1/4 to 1/2 tank no problems, because its running off the main pump,it needs the prepump to help push the fuel out,Listening by the rear gas tank,do you hear a hum?How does it sound,up and down, this is your prepump.

Does petrol tank leaks when overfilled i fillled up the petrol in Murano 2012 and its started leaking. local mechanics checked the gasket found it missing he replaced it this stoped the leaking for a week...

Yep,breather is necessary.Breather line is draining it under the car, less dangerous.Do not feel it to the top.Replace the draining line,dust/water may find a way into the tank, later u'll have to deal it (fuel filter, cloged fuel lines, fuel pump malfunction, fuel gauge malfunction).Track the problem eliminate the hipoteses of a cracked tank, loosed fuel pump.Cheers.

Can I change the fuel pump and relay on my 1988 Volvo wagon 740 myself or do I have to have a mechanic do it?

dropping fuel tank is not that hard, drive up on ramps for clearance and unbolt straps, be careful not to break fuel line when lowering tank, good luck

Problems during excelaration act's like it' going to cut out during excelaration seems like maybe a fuel problem it seems like it might be miss firing

It sounds like low fuel delivery, check the fuel filter, if it is after the pump and you can disconnect the line to the motor put the end in a container and get someone to start the motor, the fuel should spurt strongly. Beyond this you need to check the lines to the tank.

My 91 volvo 740 won't start

Could be that there is a clog at the tank-there is a screen there- can be accessed through access panel behind rear seat- also try taking off fuel line at engine and starting engine--if there is fuel present then I would rule out the tank screen problem. Good luck--let me know if that helps. C

Check the fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay first, before replacing the fuel pump. The fuses and relays are behind the the ash tray, The fuses are labelled. The relay is on the left side of the relay rack, closest to the big round bulb out sensor. But before that, how about pouring some gas line anti-freeze or fuel injector cleaner into the tank?
