    its not a diesel engine.

the exhaust is really dark.... maybe not black exactly when I start it. is there a certain filter that might need to be changed?

If it is puffing out dark/black smoke when you first start the vehicle then it would be associated with carbon build up. It will be caused by either oil in the combustion chamber or a fuel related issue. To tell you which one is the cause I will need more information about the problem, may be any helpful repair/maintenance history. If its related to the fuel it could be a poor spark, bad fuel, timing, bad air filter, ans so on. If its oil, it could be a piston ring, valve seal, or poor oil condition.

Since you have specified that it blows of black smoke it should be a diesel version engine.all diesel engines emit black smoke while it is started, due to the fact that the carbon particles staying in the silencers are blown out initially.but if you think that the smoke is too much, then try cleaning up the filters and the silencers as well as retune your engine to optimal settings.generally diesal engines should be used regularly failing to which increase in maintainence costs occur.. hope your problem is tackled. thanks for using fixya!. please dont forget to rate my solution.

How long since a tune-up? Can you check for applicable trouble codes? Use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. Check that the pressure will hold for a bit, everything off.
Smell of crankcase oil dip-stick, if it smells like gas, I wouldn't drive it till you fix the problem and change oil and filter as many times as it takes to get rid of the gas.

smoke is white or black.?
black is flooding and misfire.
White 1, is oil, smell like burnt oil, and take bloody for ever to clear.
White 2, is steam and is normal, but not so if smells like Antifreeze sick sweet smell and dissipates fast like moms tea pot steam.

Upon starting the 1995 Camry the engine dies. There is also grey smoke coming from the tail pipe. Checked the oil and there is no water in it.

Is it gray, bluish gray, or white? White smoke, during warm weather, indicates that you have a head gasket out and it's vaporizing water, it will look much like it does when you first start it on a cold day. Bluish gray indicates burning oil, which could be bad valve seating, severe engine wear on your piston rings and oil is blowing past them into the combustion chamber. Grey smoke is probably water as well, though it could be contaminated with oil, or the vehicle could be running too rich, getting too much gasoline. But typically this is more of a black smoke than gray.

Loss of power

I would start by checking for a fouled spark plug/wire. Also, check the fuel filter. It doesn't have to be good just because it is new. Could have a factory defect.
