Question about 1991 Pontiac Firebird
I have a 1991 Pontiac Z28 Formula Trans Am GTA 5.7L with an automatic transmission. I have approximately 140k miles on it. Just recently, I developed a problem with the transmission. In short, it is difficult to shift, and I can no longer go in reverse, nor can I go in neutral while the engine is running (but can if I put the shifter in the correct location and turn the engine off). Also, when I put the car into gear or into park, the whole car 'jumps' a bit violently. I have tried resetting the linkage and manually shifted the transmission to no avail.
Sounds to me like the valve body is sticking causing the low/reverse clutch pack to stick. Might try a fluid/filter change. If all else fails, at least the 700r4 is a cheap/easy transmission to rebuild.
