Question about GMC Sierra 2500HD

Removed front caliper. There is a bracket that front caliper bolts to. Tried to remove 2 bolts that bolt this bracket to hub assy. Bolts are extremely tight (almost as if they should not come off). Any suggestions on how to get the front rotors off? Thanks a lot

Turn the wheel where you can get to the bolts with a breaker bar. They are always tight, but will come off. You are on the right track.

ok here goes, I will try to remain as simple as possible/

remove the tire

locate the brake caliper, there are 2 slide bolts holding the caliper on (no need to remove them) but they are bolted into the caliper bracket. There is 2 bolts holding the caliper bracket on- remove those 2 bolts (be careful they will be pretty tight) the caliper/bracket assembly will then slide upwards off of the rotor

once you have the caliper and bracket assembly off of the rotor you need to support the caliper assembly ( I usually tie it up with a coat hanger or a piece of copper wire) make sure to tie the caliper up high or far off to the side to give yourself adequate work room.

The rotor will slide off of the hub really easy
On the back of the hub you will locate 3 bolts, usually one at the bottom and 2 on the top corners (picture a triangle)
when you remove those 3 bolts the hub is ready to be removed
given that your vehicle is an 05 I wouldn't think that the hub would be very hard to pull out, but you may need to coach it out a little
if you have to coach it out the best way to do that is to place the tire back onto the hub and put a couple of lug nuts back on. Then wiggle the tire from side to side until the hub comes off.

How to change brake pad and check rotors

To Remove:
  1. Drain brake fluid to ½ full level in reservoir.
  2. Remove the front wheels. toy_car_cam_frontbrakepads.gif

  3. Remove the front brake caliper assembly.
  4. Remove the 2 anti-squeal shims from each of the 2 brake pads.
  5. Remove the wear indicator from each of the 2 brake pads.
To Install:
NOTE: When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced together with the pads.

  1. Using a large C clamp or equivalent press piston into the caliper.
  2. Apply disc brake grease to the inside of each anti-squeal shim.
  3. Install the anti-squeal shims on each pad.
  4. Install the pad wear indicator clip to the pads.
  5. Install the pads with the pad wear indicator plate facing upward.
  6. Install the brake caliper with the 2 mounting bolts. Torque the bolts 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  7. Install the front wheels.
  8. Fill the master cylinder with new clean brake fluid.
  9. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.

To Remove:

  4. Remove the caliper slide pin bushings (TMMK made) (Kentucky).
  5. Remove the rear brake calipers.
  6. Remove the 2 brake pads with the anti-squeal shims.
  7. Remove the anti-squeal shims and pad wear indicators from brake pads.
To Install:
  1. Using a large C clamp or equivalent press the piston into the caliper.
  2. Coat both sides of the outer anti-squeal shim with pad grease.
  3. Install anti-squeal shims to each pad.
  4. Install wear indicators on the 2 brake pads.
  5. Install the caliper slide pin bushings (TMMK made) (Kentucky).
  6. Install the rear brake caliper with the slide pins. Torque the slide pins as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the caliper slide pin 25 ft-lb (34.3 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the caliper slide pin 34 ft-lb (47 Nm)
  7. Fill the master cylinder with new clean brake fluid.
  8. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  9. Install the rear wheels.

  3. Remove the front brake pads.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and caliper mounting bracket.

To Install:
  1. Align the match marks and install the front disc.
  2. Install the brake caliper mounting bracket. Torque the bolts 79 ft-lb (107 Nm).
  3. Install the brake caliper. Torque the bolts 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  4. Install new gaskets and connect the brake hose to the caliper with the banjo fitting bolt. Torque the fitting bolt 22 ft-lb (29.4 Nm).
  5. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid.
  6. Bleed the brake system.
  7. Install the front wheel.
Rear To Remove:
  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Remove the brake caliper assembly.
  3. Remove the brake pads.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and the caliper mounting bracket.
  5. Place match marks on the disc and axle hub.
  6. Remove the rear disc.
To Install:
  1. Align the match marks and install the rear disc.
  2. Install the rear brake caliper mounting bracket. Torque the bracket bolts as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the bracket bolt 46 ft-lb (61.8 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the bracket bolt 34 ft-lb (47 Nm)
  3. Install the rear brake caliper with the slide pins. Torque the slide pins as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the caliper slide pin 25 ft-lb (34.3 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the caliper slide pin 32 ft-lb (43 Nm)
  4. Install new gaskets and connect the brake hose to the caliper with the banjo fitting bolt. Torque the fitting bolt 22 ft-lb (29.4 Nm).
  5. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid.
  6. Bleed the brake system.
  7. Install the rear wheel

Procedure for front wheel bearing (hub assembly) replacement


jack up vehicle wheel in question and install jack stand.remove wheel. Unbolt 2 caliper bracket bolts and pry caliper assembly up off brake rotor and hang off to the side with bungee.remove rotor . remove large axle nut. From the back of the hub remove hub bolts most commonly 15mm.Using a slide hammer style wheel puller the hub can be removed. if all you have is a big hammer hit the hub back and forth side to side until it can be removed. Bolt in new hub assembly and torque bolts.Install axle nut and torque. install rotor and caliper. reinstall wheel and torque.

How do i change front rotors on s type jaguar 2004


you have to remove the 2 bolts holding on the caliper.
separate the caliper from the bracket.
remove the 2 bracket bolts,and after the bracket is off,the rotor can be removed.
some times the rotor needs to be hit with a 32oz hammer to knock it loose.hit the center hub,not the rotor pad surface.
wire brush the hub before installing the new rotor.
use silicone or moly lube on the slide bolts that hold on the caliper.lube the pad surface where they contact the pistons and the bracket.
you will have to compress the pistons to get new pads in.
use a piston tool from auto parts supplier.
for dual pistons,you need to use 2 of them,as one piston will go out when the other goes in.
a "c" clamp can do as well,but be careful not to damage the piston or the caliper will have to be replaced.

Remove front brake rotors on a 2001 vw beetle


There are two different types of calipers used on 01 Beetles.
The first which does not have a detachable caliper bracket is easiest and is as follows:
Remove front wheels
Unbolt calipers from integrated spindle/bracket with proper allen bit and lift calipers and pads and support them.
Remove set screw holding rotor to hub. You may need an impact screwdriver as these seize up with age.
Slide rotor off hub.

The second has a separate detachable bracket that wraps around the rotor.
Remove the front wheels
Remove two caliper bracket bolts holding bracket, caliper and pads onto rotor as a unit.
Some vehicles have a standard bolt in this position, some have a VW special star bolt, so inspect to see if you are equipped to remove these. If you have the star bolts and do not have the proper tool, you need to get it... attempting to use the wrong tool will not end well.
Use a philips screwdriver to remove the set screw holding the rotor to the hub. You may need an impact screwdriver as these screws seize up with age.
Slide rotor off the hub.

How to replace 99 gmc 3/4 tom brake rotors


Removal & Installation
  1. Remove 2/3of the brake fluid from the master cylinder.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Remove the front wheel hub extension (dual wheel vehicles only).
    • Insert a drift or large screwdriver through the brake caliper into one of the brake rotor vanes in order to prevent the rotor from turning.
    • Mark the relationship of the front wheel hub extension to the hub
    • Remove the front wheel hub extension bolts
    • Remove the front wheel hub extension from the vehicle. It may be necessary to tap around the perimeter of the hub extension with a rubber mallet to loosen it from the hub
  5. Mark the relationship of the rotor to the hub.
  6. Remove the caliper and mounting bracket as an assembly.
  7. Hang the caliper and the mounting bracket assembly from the suspension using mechanics wire.
  8. Remove the rotor.
  9. If the rotor is difficult to remove due to corrosion in the hub area use the following procedure to remove the rotor (25 series only).
    • Clean all the surface areas and the threaded holes of contamination
    • Generously apply penetrating oil or the equivalent to the hub/rotor area
    • Insert (2) M10 x 1.5 bolts (jack screws) into the threaded holes of the rotor
    • Tighten both bolts evenly to force the rotor from the hub.

To install:
  1. Clean all rust and contaminants from the both side of the rotor and the hub flange.
    NOTE If the rotor was removed using the jack screw method you must ensure that the hub flange is free of nicks or marks caused by this procedure. Remove all raised nicks or marks before installing the rotor.

  2. Install the rotor.
  3. Install the caliper and the mounting bracket as an assembly.
  4. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  5. Remove the safety stands.
  6. Lower the vehicle.

The front rotors are behind the hub will the hub slide out with a puller? or do i have to remove those ruted shut bolts, behind the caliper bracket


In order to remove rotors, once you have removed the tires, will need to remove the brake caliper.

Caliper is held in place by two bolts that face the inside of the vehicle. Remove these two bolts, then slide the caliper away from the rotor. Rotor should then just come off.

Corrosion may prevent the rotor from just sliding off, especially if you are up north in the regions where salt is used extensively in winter months.

remove caliper, caliper bracket it may or may not have a screw that holds it to the hub pretty easy actually

Brake rotor replacement


you should only have to take off the tire and the calipers, and the caliper bracket, there is no hub on the front wheels. there should be 2 bolts holding on the caliper bracket, usually with a big allen screw. they may be stuck so use a hammer to tap them loose. good luck
