Question about 2005 Pontiac Grand Am

Repeated turning on of Service Engine light after attempts to fix it.

The service engine light on my 2005 Pontiac Grand Am has been on ever since I bought it two years ago. Recently came the time to do my emissions test in order to be able to renew the registration with the state, and it was rejected citing some oxygen sensor malfunction, etc. I took the car into a shop specializing in failed emissions tests, the first go-around resulting in a replaced gas cap, the second trip to the shop saw the canister vent solenoid changed. Needless to say, both times the engine light came back within a few days while I was trying to drive the specified miles in order to reset the computer of the faulty codes. I'm now dreading going back to the same hack-shop for a third time and spending more money. Is there anything else that is possibly wrong with my Pontiac that is causing the SES light to come on?

I stopped by Auto Zone and the code that I got was 455, among the 4 probable causes they listed I already had 2 fixed, that being (a) a new gas cap and (b) vent solenoid. Other 2 probable causes listed are a broken canister and a vacuum leak at engine. Should I just tell the mechanic to look at these two possible issues next time I stop by the repair shop?

There are several things that can cause this, but here is what you do Goto a schucks auto parts store have them scan the computer and have them print the codes, this is free, and then get back to me on the PO codes that show up, with the codes I can help you sovle the problem, it could be as simple as a bad heater on a 02 sensor or the throttle plate being dirty and needs to be cleaned which you could do yourself but I do need the codes to help identify the problem because it could be many things, with the codes it will help me narrow it down to what to check and where you can go to get info I need to help you.

First go to a local parts store, and have them check the codes. They will tell you what needs to be replaced.

If they didn't replace the oxygen sensor, then that needs to be done. You can get them at the parts store, they are easy to replace. Can be done with basic tools.

Most of the time if ses light on it will let you know there something wrong .if you got a bad sensor or sensors light will remain on until its repair.

Service engine soon light

The service engine soon could be an indicator that you need to have minor maintenance done in the near future. I had a Grand Am that the service engine light would turn on when I was getting close to needing an oil change. You might check your owners manual for an exact reason as to why it turns on.

How to clear 2000 pontiac grand am "service engine soon" light

Normally you would have it scanned find out what the problem is and fix it then with the same scanner erase the code which would turn off your light but if you dont fix the problem the lights just going to come back on.There are two ways to clear the codes the best is with the scanner the other is disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes.

Sounds like you have a bad wheel speed sensor. You need to have it scanned. Since it's been sitting, it might just be a bad connection to one of the speed sensors.
