These are breather tubes make sure both are clear one may be plugged, make sure transfer case is not overfilled,my suggestion is to remove fluid start fresh,i'm assuming this is an automatic it should take just about 1 quart of 80-90w gear oil ,if it's a standard it will take around 4 quarts good luck

Why is my AWD subaru only 2WD?

you will likely need to replace the following:
Duty C Solenoid
Transfer Clutch Pack
Reduction gear
All of these parts are located in the tail end of the 4EAT automatic transmissions. The reduction gear can separate from its hub and damage the above mentioned parts too.

For a 1999 Subaru Legacy does it have just the screw on transmission filter or is there also one in the pan?

I have a 99 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon also. I just changed my fluid & filters. There is a spin-on AND a bolt-in that's inside (you have to drop the pan).

Where do is the tranny fluid filler on my '99 Legacy Outback? Please don't tell me I have to pour 9.8 qts down the dipstick tube!

yes you do but if you only removed filter and fluid in the pan it should only be around 5 quarts. also make sure you use the right dipstick located on right side of the engine because there is one on the left side for the transfer case which takes gear lube. might want to purchase a transmission funnel makes it easier.

My 1992 Subaru Legacy 2.2L 5-speed manual trans was idling while I was doing mainrenace. There was a lod screech from the trans and the engine stalled. Pushed in the clutch and the engine starts but I can...

I would say that a bearing froze up or something along those lines. So its not dead but you cannot split the case so finding and replacing it would be loads of fun.

I have a 99 subaru legacy outback trans slip

cheak your fluid level in your transmission as if it is low it wont go into gear properly you will move it from park or neutral to a gear it can take a while before it will kick into gear if you top up the fluid that should fix the problem if it still does it after this take it to a tranmission specalist and have it serviced as the bands may be streched

'95 subaru legacy -where is my trans mission fluid dipstick?

is located in the passanger side of the engine. almost right above the universal joint that powers the tires/ it's on the BELL HOUSING if you open the hood and look close you will see a 2 inch curved handle/ it's verry small to see but if you take your time you will see it. the dipstic itself its about 4 inches long . you have to use a funnel and pour the fluid inthe dipstick hole.
