Sounds like the garage didn't do something correctly.

Apparently heads are a serious problem for BMW.

Here's a brief history and an unofficial description of BMW's position on their head problems:

Here's a step-by-step on the Timing Case ProfileGasket (aka, the head gasket) replacement for reference so you can see what should have been done:

However, the good news is that the difficulty starting and the fuel leak may be just the result of a clumsy re-assembly in fuel delivery bar. Check out:

Now doesn't replacing a few O-rings sound better than having to tear the head off again? :-)

Blowing white smoke on starting

if this is about a gas engine car , id say this can be a few things , one is that fuel pressure regulator isn't working well and engine doesn't have proper fuel pressure , another is that u have coolant leaking into cylinder , this mixes with fuel and is bunrt off when starting makes white smoke (steam) , this coolant can arrive in there via either a bad intake or head gasket , the test 4 this is to see if your coolant is low

I recently changed the head gasket after overheating. The car is not starting and emitting heavy smoke

How hot did the car get before you had to change the head gasket? If the car had extreme heat then it could have damaged the rings. The rings will collapse and allow oil to squeeze past and burn out of the exhaust causing the smoke. Also since the rings are collapsed the vehicle will have no compression hence the no start. First thing is do a compression check.

Make sure you dont run out of fuel, make sure 1/4 tank of gas is always there and the reason is that the fuel pump should be submerged in the gas all the time, if not then it will heat up and die.
It would also be good practic to change the fuel filter once a year, if there is no external filter then ad one in line filter for your safety.
As for the mis at idle it could be due to bent valve, burnt valve seat, vacume leak, head gasket minor leak, bad coil, shorted plug, bad gas. If the engine light is on which it should have because of the missing then I would like to know the codes.

2001 Chrysler 300M Engine Light on all the time

Hello, my engine light was on for a VERY LONG time and everytime I got it checked no one could tell me what the problem was because things always checked out fine. The "code" says its a loose gas cap or something, but it wasnt that. My 300M also was having A HARD TIME STARTING UP for about 8 months and leaking coolant for about a month. I finally found a mechanic who knew what he was doing; 1. Leaking Radiator 2. Coolant found in #2 or #3 cylinder. The cause of this was a busted HEAD GASKET. If your 300M has trouble starting and the Engine light stays on have a mechanic check your engine for a busted head gasket and see if all your cylinders are firing correctly. I had to pay $2600 for a new Head Gasket, Radiator and all new hoses plus labor. CRYING!!!!!!!!!!

My engine coolant has a gas smell ? Just had a brand new radiator installed and thermostat and also replaced spark plugs and coils. 2000 ford f-150 v-8 5.4 liter

Your head may be leaking exhaust into your coolant during the compression stroke. Have you had new heads installed or maybe an overhaul? Has your Truck been overheating lately? This can be a sign of failing head gaskets since gas only enters through the carburetor or injectors.

Loosing antifreze smells like its burning no leaks... car starting to backfire again changed plugs stopped for about a month starting again..

if your car is smoking mainly white smoke this coolant which probaly got past your head gasket and is resteing on top the pistons which means you need a head gasket if there is a milky colored substance on the oil dip stick its going past your rings and need new rings check your cooling system first with a pressure test you should hear the air leaking out from your leak if it isnt internal

Starts hard when cold

Faulty idle control system/sensor, or intake gaskets leaking. If you've been using starting fluid on it, that would be why. Don't ever use starting fluid on a gas engine. If you're lucky enough to not blow your own head off, you aren't going to be lucky enough to cause extreme engine damage. ie: blown intake gaskets, bent valves etc.
