Transaxle check engine light

I have a 2001 Mercury Sable LS. A Transaxle check engine light just came on. After running the code i found it to be code P1779 which means "Transmission control indicator lamp circuit out of range non-mil". I am looking for any help is troubleshooting this issue. Based on some research i have done the possible issues are listed below. 1) Open or short circuit condition 2) Poor electrical connection 3) Low or dirty transmission fluid (i changed the transmission fluid and filter about 30k miles ago so i do not think it is this one) 4) Faulty shift solenoid (I do not believe it is this one as it shifts through all gears fine) Any help would be appreciated!

I am a 24 year ford master tech, and over the years we found the harness in the transmission was the cause and not the solonoid as you described, In rare cases the valve body was clogged back forcing the flow, My first bet is the harness INSIDE the transmission

It means that the Transmission control module has detected a fault in the operation of the transmission or its controls. You now need it scanned to see what fault code or codes was set in the memory of the TCM.

Transmission fluid

30k on trans fluid may set the sensor off. The wiring to the sensor could be a problem too. A faulty sensor will give the indication too.

Check engine light

disconnect the battery for one hr.reconnect,if it still not ok,go to auto zone.they will tell you and give you printout of your problem.do not waste any more of your time.

What dose the idoit light that looks like a gear with a ! mark in the center of it mean? 2001 merc sable

It means there is a transmission electrical problem. There should be a transmission trouble code stored that will point you in the right direction.This will not always turn on the check engine light.

Mercury sable 2001 duratec engine DOHC I get check engine light and diagnostic code PO401". Any suggestions?

Barring any vacuum leaks, P0401 is indicative of a bad EGR valve. Hope this answers your question. Best of luck.

without a fault code its impossible to diagnose. try pep boys or aamco or auto zone they will pull the code for you, usually for free. The code will relate to a sensor or area to be fixed. This will save you money and needless parts . post the code or codes so we can help

Engine Lights On...

When you hook up the scanner, make sure the ignition is off. After you plug it in, turn the key to "run".....do not start the car.
