cracked block. once it heats up the crack gets bigger and the oil gets thinner which makes more oil burn. run car without the oil cap on and see if lots of air/ oil comes out if so thats blow by and you need a new engine.

I put Bar's in to stop oil into cooling systm but I think the circ is bad. My top hose is hot but bottom hose is cool. Engine is running at normal temp for 1 hour. Help!

What does it mean when your head gasket blows and our heads warp?


In most cases yes the head(s) does warp, but head gaskets do leak without the head or heads being warped, have seen it both ways, it really depends on how hot the engine got.

Hello, my wife overheated my 04 Durango 4.7 to the max until it shut down on her.now it's got a constant knocking sound but I can't tell what area of motor it's coming from.what could of broke.


Its very possible that one of the head gaskets are blown and leaking coolant into the Combustion chamber causing it to bend the rod or rods ! Also is there coolant in the oil ? One trick to manually find the area is to use a wood handle from a mop or broom and place on different point on the engine with your ear against the handle and note any sound differences ?

Heating has stoped working and there is a little water in the oil, think radiator may be leaking, does my car just need a new rad


water in the oil will turn the oil brown like mud,is that what you see? if so,then you have a blown head gasket,do not run motor if this is the case as the motor wiil spin a crank bearing or lock up.are you sure about the water in the oil? look for real brown oil just like mud with bubbles on the oil dipstick. if the heats stopped working it may be because the radiator's low on fluid. look in the radiator for low coolant,if you can't see the coolant when you remove the radiator cap,it's low. with engine cool,remove the radiator cap 1st then start the engine. do you see steam and fluid blowing up frome the radiator? if so,you have a blown head gasket in the motor. head gaskets can blow and leak water into the oil or oil into the radiator. or blow and leak into the exhaust sysytem and blow coolant out of the tail pipe. three different ways for a head gasket to blow. usually the head gasket only blows when the engine has been run really hot!!! hope this helps.thank you for choosing fixya .com

I have a 1998 Saturn. The reservoir often leaks water/antifreeze and light comes on to indicate. I have had water pump as well as reservoir replaced. Doesn't leak everday but still leaks. WHat is this?...


you need to find that leak, is the leak visible? if its not from radiator or the reservoir, the only other place I could think you can lose water is the head gasket. It happens to high miles and hard driver. 100k miles would likely be a head gasket. Leaking head gasket will also cause the engine temperature to rise and run super hot. antifreeze will leak through the head gasket down to your oil pan mixing oil and water. Check your oil by pulling the dip stick and see if you have oil mix with water; it will have a slimy looking colors, oil is light color and it should never be black. if it black than change your oil and inspect it afterward when the car has been running for while. when engine really hot cause the heat to effect the starter not to engage or start or engine is too hot to run. repairing head gasket could run anywere from 500-800 bucks.

Does the vehicle overheat on the road? If it does and pushes big burps of coolant into the reserve tank then you could have a head gasket leak. Usually what happens with a head gasket leak is that the engine will often start and run normally but will soon start to push coolant out in a kind of foamy burp as the combustion gasses that accumulate in the engine block force their way out. You can have a small head gasket leak that allows combustion gasses to escape into the cooling system without getting coolant back into the engine and often the first symptoms of this kind of a leak is a motor that suddenly overheats, the heater quits blowing hot air and after a short while everything returns to normal for a day or so. As the leak worsens however it may keep pushing coolant out of the reserve tank with a cool or cold engine as the pressure builds to quickly for the reserve tank to handle it fully. Having said that if you have a perfectly good cooling system that is hot and take off the radiator cap it will spray blistering coolant coolant all over so never remove the cap from a warm or hot cooling system! Most additives won't stop a head gasket leak as there is just too much pressure for them to "stick" in the leak and they just get forced out of source of the leak. It's rare but you could have a water pump that's not circulating enough coolant around but usually you have different symptoms than this.

My bmw 330i oveheated recently but is still blowing out hot air. i have checked the dip stick and the oil cap and both seem fine and no evidence of water, could this be the head gasket.


When is the last time you had your cooling system services. It could mean several things, but without more information, its nearly impossilbe to diagnose.

Could be a faulty thermostat.
Could be a leak or lack of water.
Could be a vapor lock where the system was not run with the cap off after adding anti-freeze/water mixture caused by too much air in the system.
Could be a faulty or leaking water pump.
Could be a broken fan belt or fault secondar fan.
Could be a leaking head gasket.

sounds like u have a leaking head gasket, the more power u apply the quicker it leaks as the pressure goes up in the combustion chamber, this puts combustion gases into the cooling system and makes the engine run hot, gas does not cool the engine..

Car heats up, and seems to run out of water quick without leaking the water. I see the radiator but the only means of filling the radiator is the reservoir tank, and once you fill that one there is no more...


There is no radiator cap, the Lanos has what is called a "sealed cooling system", popular on newer model European cars and most Asian models, even some of the latest US made cars. You can squeeze and release the upper radiator hose repeatedly to "pump" some of the air out/water in.

The engine has to be leaking water somewhere. It could be a small leak that only leaks under pressure (when the car is hot) and the water is evaporating as fast as it leaks out. This kind of leak can be very hard to find! I had this problem on my daughter's 2001 Lanos until today, when I found the leak. A heater hose burst today while she was getting gas, luckily the car was stopped! It had been using about a tank full of water every month (about one quart or liter), but could find no leak. I suspected a leaking head gasket or cracked (which could be your problem), and was preparing to take the head off when she was on Christmas break from college. I'm glad that hose burts!

A leaking head gasket or cracked head is hard to detect. Most of the time there will only be a small leak when the engine is hot, and the small amount of water pulled into a cylinder is vaporised as the engine runs. There will be no water in the oil unless there is a large leak. Pull the oil dip stick and look under the oil fill cap. If there is a tan looking substance on either one there is water in the oil and you definitely have a cracked head or leaking head gasket. If it's just the gasket you're lucky -- the gasket will usually only leak if the engine has been run very hot (boiling over and then run a bit), and then the head will either crack or warp. A warped head can be repaired, but must be taken to a machine shop for repair. A machine shop can also check a head for cracks, as the cracks are usually too small to see, and usually only open and leak when the head is hot (normal engine operating temperature).
