At exactly 12 miles from my house at same intersection my 2001 jeep Grand Cherokee shuts off and I relight ignition, drive up hill and gets clunky trans mission troubles. Also reverse whines, does not work till reshift, whines again, then slams!
Have a pressure test done on the transmission to check for internal mechanical faults. run fault codes to check for electronic faults.. Check condition and level of oil Have the bands and clutch packs adjusted
Testimonial: "This "expert" is just that! My level was too low. The cold weather is when it started, checking fluids is usually the first thing I do, except during storms. But I thought I would check the net. Then went out checked fluids, exactly the problem. I filled up and took a ride, no problem! Just from my short description the person EXPERTLY nailed it. Thanks!"

By the grayish color, fluid being thick, and metal shavings, the clutches are pretty much worn out. It's time to either rebuilding your transmission or just installing a good used one. The fluid normally should be a reddish color. The gray is from the actual clutch material going away.

the nuetral safety and backup are one switch, it screws into the trans case, has three pins on it, replace it, real cheap about $12 from rockauto.com

Starter...if the starter is old, it is getting heat soaked. Replace the solenoid.

it is possable/likely a bad ECTS (engine coolant tep. sensor), this can cause the injectors to allow to much fuel into cylinders and cause a low compression and or flooding situation, good luck, marty
