Question about 1998 Ford Escort

1 Answer

Ignition problem I have a 1998 ford escort. Sometimes when trying to start, there is no ignition, and after a while it will come on. I have checked the wiring, and cleaned the ignition switch. Could it be the chip in the key that is giving problems?

There is an ignition module that drives the coil.they go bad because the heat sink paste dries out and they overheat

IAC (Idle Air Control Solenoid) Located on the throttle body, I would start by checking that out. Sometimes they can carbon up pretty bad and cause your issue.

Hi there,

Check the earth strap from the starter motor to the neg battery. Clean up the ends witha wire brush and refit. Try the ignition again. Make sure the other wires going to the starter motor are in good condition.

Stater up (sic) and away you go.

Vote for me when this works, thanks.

Sounds like possibly the ignition switch is going out. Try jiggling the key in the ignition in the on position and see if your lights come back on.

1998 ford escort won't start; engine won't fire up?

CHECK FOR THE FUEL STRAINER/FILTER! could have been clogged.
check for blockage at the air intake.
check for battery voltage and current, insufficient starting speed makes less compression and makes ignition very difficult!
due to several ignition attempts battery might have discharged a lot! you may have it checked for its voltage and acidity level

presence of water on the fuel can also cause your problem! it prevents the fuel to ignite at the cylinder.

My 1998 Ford Escort will not turnover eventhough it sounds like it wants to start.

Most times, Ford has a defective ignition switch. What happens is the metal tabs straighten out making the internal parts loose contact. I'd check there first. (Not the key side/the back side- with wires)
