"evap canister" almost cracked off. What exactly does it do? Should it be replaced?

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee I-6: I have just about cracked off a black box just behind the driver's side of the front bumper. I have checked the lines running to it and they read "evap canister." It also runs a hose to the box covering the exhaust valves. What is the evap canister. Is it necessary, and if so should I replace it?

Yes, you should replace it. This canister is to take the fumes from your gas tank into your engine. You need this to pass your state smog test.

2004 jeep grand cherokee code 442/455

OBD code P0442 Small EVAP leak detected you may need to check the EVAP canister under the vehicle and the purge valve as well check for cracks on the canister or the purge valve and check all the rubber hoses connected to them foe cracks or holes. If you find any damage parts replace them. P0455 which means a large EVAP leak is sometimes referred as the gas cap leak check your gas cap and secure it tight if you still have the code change the gas cap hope this helps after you find and fix the problems get the vehicle to a shop and they will use an OBD scan tool to clear the codes.

Fuel cap code

Large EVAP leaks are Many times the EVAP NVLD PUMP. It should be on the side of the charcoal canister. it can also be a EVAP hose that is not properly installed or cracked really bad. So it is important to inspect to entire system first. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

Check engine light, vapor canister, have any idea

I would start with the gas cap replacement and see if the issue resolves itself. If you do have a problem with the EVAP (canister) system, it may require tools the average person does not have to help diagnose and correct/repair.

Where can i get an evap chart for 1999 jeep grand cherokee

Check under the hood for the complete chart of the vaccum routing of the EVAP.
The weak spot in the Jeep is the solonid valve and the EVAP cansiter.
If you fail the emission because of EVAP then look for the the gas fill neak for leak.
There are many potential leaky spot.
The key is DO NOT TOP OFF the gas when refilling. They excess fuel can damage the valve and canister.
