Question about 1996 Audi A4

1996 Audi A4 quattro 2.8l manual shift is having shifting problem

My daughter tells me that when she tries to move forward or backward the engine RPM runs very high and the car barely moves. She had other vehicles close to her and was concerned about hitting something - I was going to have her try in 2nd gear... I cannot get access to the car until tomorrow most likely. I plan to first check the Transmission fluid and go from there. Any other advice prior to my going there will be helpful and appreciated. If I were to do a fluid change whaat am I in for and what will I need? I don't have a manual here until I get to the car.

Thanks ahead,

It is a 5 speed manual transmission. Is the clutch job on this model difficult? Anything particularly tricky one should know?

    Thank you for the solution...

If the car is a 5spd the clutch is burnt out of it. if it is automatic, it could be low on fluid, or tranny needs a rebuild.

because its a quattro taking the tranny out becomes a nightmare because of the rear drive. lots of shields, and exhaust must be dropped

How do you change the dash clock in a 1996 audi a4 quattro

The owners manual will tell you if you have it. What you do to change the clock is find the small knob on the instrument cluster (think it's the left one) and pull and twist. The clock should change when the knob is twisted.

Audi a6 quattro 1.8t It says press clutch pedal to start engine on dash, but its automatic/tiptronic.

The shift needs to be in park or neutral to start. to shift from neutral with the engine running, you have to touch the brakes. Can't explain the label on the dash, unless it has been replaced.

2000 Audi A4 quattro with abrupt gear shifting & low oil pressure

I hope that you had the proper weight oil installed, at your oil change. If your oil is up to the proper level, and it's rattling ,this is VERY bad. White smoke usually means steam in the exhaust, and that means a blown head gasket. Check your coolant level. I wouldn't drive it anymore......until someone knowledgeable can diagnose it!!!!!

1996 audi a4 transmission hard shifting

Get the transmission scanned at the dealership. If it has incorrect gear ratio code stored, it needs a transmission. Only the torque convertor or valve body can be replaced for any repairs at the dealership, so it needs to be diagnosed correctly. Any authorized ZF transmission repair shop can also repair them, more than the Audi dealerships can, so thats another alternative.

1996 Audi A4 Automatic transmission wont shift when cold

Silly question: Have you checked the transmission fluid level, and is it to manufacturer's spec?

A4 Transmission shifting

Fist thing to do is change the transmission fluid and filter. Audi says the transmissions have lifetime fluid, but that's bull - change it first and see if that helps. If not, have the car scanned by a shop and have the chassis codes looked into. If there's a true electrical control problem, there should be at least one code stored (which may not trip the check-engine light).

I would check the transmission control unit sounds like a software problem. The dealer might be able to just do a reset Good luck.
