trans problems,. check tranny ATF levels by the book and never done like and engine ever. "when he puts it in reverse it won't move like it is stuck in neutral yes engine always starts no stalls or stops thank you for responding"
REDUX 1 , tranny fails only and only in revere. if the levels are good per the manual free below link and the fluid is not NASTY, clear pink but can have light tan color not like mudd. no metal shinny flacks see on end of dip stick.
the transmission reverse servo is bad, as most say so.
First, I think you have been going to the wrong mechanic if he is going to charge you $500 to diagnose a simple stalling problem.
Second, just because the check engine light is not on, does not mean that there are no fault codes stored in your computer. Some codes only turn the check engine light on if the problem is present at the time that you have the engine running. Other codes do not turn the check engine light on at all, but will usually store "Freeze Frame Data" to allow a technician to see what the operating conditions were when the code set. So it would still be advisable to scan your engine computer for possible codes. With all that said, your Regal is equipped with a 3.8L engine. Those things are notorious for the crankshaft position sensors going bad and not setting any codes.
They are also known for the ignition control modules going bad and causing a no-spark condition. When this happens it will usually set a code for EST Spark Timing (which may or may not turn the check engine light on).
the catalytic converter most likely is no the sorurce of the problem, older design bead type Cat converters used to plug, but it is very rare on the newer ceramic honeycomb cats, u need to have the electronic engine control tested, are u getting a check engije light? if not has the fuel filter been replaced every 30,000 miles? also a part called the Mass Airflow sensor can cause these symptoms as well as igntion system problems.
