Trans I.D. by vin code

I have a 1992 Chev Silverado. I would like to know how to tell from the vehicle vin code what transmission is in it? I just purchased a 1992 truck and was told by a 3rd party that the 2nd party changed the engine, but I am not for sure. How do I tell the size of the enine and tranny?

    K is the 8th digit.

I figured out what the VIN decoded out as, I am just unsure if the original is still in the truck. The "car lot" I purchased this from stated that the individual they purchased it from 'said' he changed the engine around 3 years ago. How do I tell what is in there at this time? It acts more like a truck with 196000 miles on it than it does a 'replacement' engine 3 years old. After reading some of the other posts it acts like an original 5.7 but I am unsure and want to start some work on it but with out knowing what is in there I do not know where to start. Thank you

I can tell you what engine is suppose to be in it by the VIN. I can tell you what transmission you have if you can describe the shape of the bottom pan. As far as the engine that you have that is tough. The engine size should be stamped on the rear of the engine near the distributor near where the engine and transmission meet. Rectangular pan 4 speed= 700r4 Pan like the state of Illinois, 3 speed= TH400 Squared off in front, tapers on both sides to the rear and slopes up to the rear, 4 speed=4L80E These are the only transmissions that were factory installed in a 1992 C1500. If it looks different let me know. You never know what someone has installed.

Tenth position of vin tells year of vehicle, for 1992 should be N. 8th position of vin tells engine that it left assembly plant with. they are:Z 4.3 liter V6
H 5.0 liter V8
K 5.7 liter V8
C or J 6.2 liter diesel
F P or S 6.5 liter diesel
N 7.4 liter V8 (454)
as far as the transmission goes not sure, some of these trucks had turbohydramatic 400 and of course there would be different (heavier) torque converter in diesels.

I am having a problem with the automatic transmission on my car is there a diagnostic test that can determine iof there is a problem wit fuses or sensors

Yes the computer in the car detect faults with the operation of the engine and the auto trans and generates fault codes. It logs the fault (not the cause which it cannot determine) and there can be multiple different problems that can generate a particular fault code so a proper diagnosis is very important.

Take your car to a Chev dealer service center or to a competent independent Chev specialist and have the vehicle scanned for faults and any irregularities with the operation of the transmission. The scanning equipment picks up the particular fault code or codes the computer has generated and is also used to check irregularities with the operation of the transmission.

For your issue I would go to a dealer as they will have the best diagnostic equipment, especially where transmissions are concerned. They will more than likely have also seen other vehicles of the same model with the same symptoms as your vehicle has now. Most likely there will be an electronic component on your transmission that has failed and needs to be replaced but you won't know until a proper scan and then a diagnosis of the faults have been carried out.

00 Chevy 2500 4x4 6.0 has intermittent oil burning and cold start lifter chatter and takes a second to pick up oil pressure but quiets down after a few seconds and runs quieter than my 02 4.8 with half the...

try adding some valve & lifter top oil to your oil.
If you ever take the oil pan off, remove the oil pump pickup screen and clean it. You can also try a lighter weight oil.
If you take the VIN number to your chev dealer parts dept they can tell you which transmission you have....for free.

I need a new Trans for a 1996 ford Taurus GL wagon.

The best way is to use the vehicle VIN number, here is a link to a Ford Vin Number Look-up site, that will tell you the transmission code and the type of transmission you have:

How do I know which transmission model is in my 1997 chevy cavalier 2.2L

If you look at your vehicle ID Tag inside the drivers side door it should give you a transmission code. If not, the VIN should have included the trans code in it. If you call the Chevrolet dealership with it they can tell you what you have.

Trans I.D. by vin code

You can't tell from the VIN. The id # is on the right side of the transmission stamped on the case or on a tag attached to the case.
