Question about 1997 Dodge Dakota

Transmition problem just put a used automatic transmition in my 97 dakota but i didn't change the torch converter it was tested b4 i bought it and and it still wont go in gear. and i didnt have the proper for the vaccum and transmition lines. i need to know why it wont work?

No forward or reverse? After you installed it how much fluid were you able to get in it before it read full?

Check the starter. If your power supply (battery) is fresh and healthy, then a slow crank can really only be caused by a failing starting motor.

Which transmissions interchange with the 97 Dakota 3.9 automatics ?


Your transmission is the 42RE, formerly A500SE, and A904 way before that. Due to the electronics involved, you would need the computer and associated harness for a manual Dakota if you were thinking about using a non-electronic automatic.

Ok my 97 dodge dakota v8 automatic transmission will start without an issue, but as soon as I go from park to drive or reverse it will jerks it, then die, I'm hoping it's not an issue with the torque...


Sounds like the torque converter clutch is locked up. May just need a new TCC solenoid or it could possibly be a failed torque converter. This just happened to me and I figured out that it was in the valve body by disconnecting the connector on the transmission that goes to the solenoids on the valve body. This immediately unlocked the torque converter so I could move it into the garage to get it apart. Then, I changed the complete valve body and that cleared up ALL of my transmission problems!

The car start of very slow getting up to speed, it has a auto tran.


Check for high back pressure in the exhaust system....blocked catalytic converter.

To test...remove the front Oxygen Sensor and road test. It will be a bit loud, but your not driving far.
If it accelerates quicker, you have blocked cat'.

If not, you may have a failed torque converter or slipping transmission drum or clutch assembly if an automatic..

Hello I was wondering if a 4T60-E Transmition from a 1995 Monte Carlo Z34 (3.4L) fit a 1997 Monte Carlo LS (3.1L)??


I just answered the same question for another person. Physically the transmissions will interchange; just be sure to check ALL electrical plug's BEFORE installation AND change your linkage arm. The flywheel SHOULD be the same diameter also,just be sure to check the torque converter bolt pattern b4 installation. Lastly,be sure that the dip sticks are the same........ALL the part's on both transmission's are interchangeable,change as necessary.

Catalytic converter


this is a job you can't do at home without a torch to heat the exhaust pipe, the converter is a slip fit and nearly imposable to remove without a torch, on the ground it will require 2 people in most cases to get it off, one heating the pipe read hot and the other pulling for all it's worth.
