Regardless of the engine, engine knocking, and oil pressure light say the engine needs to be removed to replace the rod bearings, main bearings, and oil pump. That is if you want to keep the vehicle and drive it.

  • its420_us May 11, 2010

Your oil pump is located inside the oil pan. It is not a job for a non-mechanic to tackle. It does require the engine to be removed from the vehicle. If you continue to drive the vehicle with no oil pumping through it, you will destroy the engine beyond repair in a very short time.

How many miles on the engine?

Silly questions: Have you changed oil & filter recently -- have you checked the oil?

Engine Knocking usually means a spun crank bearing and that's an engine job no it's own. You may be better off replacing the whole engine. But here is what's going to take to replae the Oil Pump.
Drive your vehicle up onto ramps or lifts so you have room to work as you pull out the oil pump. You could also use a jack, but make sure you brace the front wheels so they don't roll. Take the left front wheel off and remove the engine splash shield and drive belt. Prevent the crankshaft from rotating while you loosen its balancer bolt by using the holding tool J 38122-A.
Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt, throw it away, and then take the balancer out. Continue disassembly by removing the drive belt tensioner, the water pump-to-front cover bolts, the rest of the front cover-to-engine bolts and the cover and gasket. Finish the disassembly by removing or disconnecting the oil pressure relief valve, the oil pump cover and the oil pump gears. To install the new oil pump  Insert your new oil pump and install the oil pump gears and the oil pump cover. You want to tighten the bolts to 53 in-lb. Connect the oil pressure relief valve and tighten its plug to 30 ft-lb. Reassemble the front engine cover by installing the front cover gasket, cover and cover-to-engine bolts.Install the water pump-to-front cover bolts and tighten all the bolts to 15 ft-lb. After this, put on the drive belt tensioner and tighten that bolt to 33 ft-lb. Put the crankshaft balancer and bolt on. Grab the crankshaft holding tool J 38122-A once again to keep the crankshaft from rotating while you tighten the new crankshaft balancer bolt to 74 ft-lb plus 75 degrees. Put the engine splash shield, the drive belt and the front wheel back on. Start the engine and check for leaks on the parts you installed.
Good luck and hope this helps

Hi! Listen, it may not even be the oil pump as there may be other causes. Without seeing it in person, it's hard to tell what is causing the low oil pressure. I do know this handy diagnostic article tells you exactly what the common problems are of low oil pressure:

Hope this helps.

ALTHOUGH MY DIPSTICK READS FINE, WHENEVER I PUSH ON THE BRAKES, MY OIL PRESSURE GOES DOWN TO 0 AND MY CHECK GAUSES LIGHT COMES ON

I would say that you are definitely low on oil pressure. The oil pump is usually located inside of the oil pan. Depending on what vehicle you have you might have to have the engine removed to access the oil pan to get to the oil pump. I know on a Cadillac Northstar engine you get 43 hours to do an oil pump.

How would i no if i need a oil pump?

If you need an oil pump you will be experiencing problems that are associated with low oil pressure. The most obvious sign would be an oil pressure warning light coming on. Other symptoms would be an oil pressure gauge that is reading very low (if your vehicle is equipped qith a gauge). Valves and valve lifters continuously ticking or loud knocking noises in the engine are some of the more severe symptoms.

Oil pressure at zero

its possible that the oil gauge go to bad, the oil pressure sending unit may have gone bad, the oil pump may have quit. I suggest you find the oil pressure line coming off engine, put another oil pressure gauge on it and then just crank the engien to see if you get any oil pressure whatsoever.

If you don't, then I would check the oil pressure sending unit next before I tore the oil pan off to examine the oil pump itself. Whatever you do, do not run the engine with zero oil pressure otherwise you will seize up the engine and that will cost big bucks to repair.

Hope this heslp (remember to rate this answer)

Oil pump goes bad what are the symptoms? I was driving and heard a loud noise now my truck is running rough and sluggish and there is no oil pressure at the gauge. There's a loud knocking under the...

It sounds like you have slipped a bearing and you'll need a new engine. You get most of your oil pressure from your connecting rod bearing and crank shaft bearing, you still have some oil pressure. No oil pressure will cause your engines ECM to shut the engine down, but from what you have described. The engine is to far gone for repairs and a engine swap would be the more economical thing to do.
Thank you for using fixya and sorry for the bad news.

An engine is usually not permanently damaged by running without oil for a minute or two. They are often run with no oil pressure for 10-15 seconds every time the oil is changed. It's never really good to run them without oil, but it doesn't usually hurt them if it's only a minute or two. Hydraulic lifters, however, do pump out quickly and make A LOT of noise. If the oil pump fixes the oil pressure problem, you should be fine. Obviously I can't guarantee it, but if it was only a minute, I'd give it much better than a 50/50 chance -- I'd say it is probably more like a 95% chance you'll be fine.

Engine knock hard over 2500 rpm

Does the oil light come on or the knock occur during the engine warm up after a cold start?
There could be a couple of problems causing the issue. You could have an oil pressure pump or pump pressure regulator sticking. I would have a mechanical oil pressure gauge installed and verify oil pressure at idle and 2500 rpms to make sure oil pressure is in normal ranges.
You could also have excessive piston rod bearing, crankshaft bearing or cam shaft bearing wear that will cause oil pressure to drop too low to prevent the rod knock your hearing at 2500 rpm.
You said a knock and not a ticking noise,so I don't believe a lifter is the issue at 2500 rpm.
Start with the oil pressure check and go from there.
Let me know.

2003 GMC Sierra Knock sensor and oil pressure??

the knock sensors are located below the intake plenum,or,upper intake manifold as some call it, they screw into the lower intake, the front one is sensor 1, the rear is sensor 2. it is wise to change both if you have some miles.since you are going to be buying a gasket set to do this job.the sensors are cheaper than the gaskets.

Location of knock sensor on 1994 toyota 22vre engine

The Knock sensor on a 22re is located under the intake manifold on the engine block. to the upper left of the oil filter. With is the passenger side of the engine. I believe it is yellow in color. Not do be confused with the oil pressure sensor which is close by. The knock sensor has a larger electrical connector. Good luck it can be hard to get to.

Oil light flashin with engine knock

To accurately check oil pressure, you need a mechanical pressure gauge and feed line. To use, remove the factory pressure sending unit and attach gauge.
Likely if the engine is already knocking, the problem is already there and the oil pressure light is telling you that (knock is either rod bearing, main bearing or lifter) Oil pumps do not generally fail. the pump gets oil before any other component is the last to not get oil. Pressure loss at a worn bearing causes pressure drop that turns on light (unless you don't have sufficient oil in the pan.)
