Thanks, so it is the cv joints, how hard is it for you to replace them yourself? Are there one on the left and right side of the car or just the right side? How expensive are they?

Your best bet would be to have the CV joints inspected. When they go bad they have a tendency to pop and crunch and will eventually fall apart if they are not replaced.

Anymore you don't repair the actual CV joint, you just replace the complete axle. An average CV axle usually runs around $100.00 give or take a little. They are not extremely difficult to replace but you do need to have a fair amount of mechanical experience to attempt it. A novice mechanic might not should attempt it but have a qualified mechanic or shop do the job.

That sounds like a cv joint. It is right behind the tire on the end of the axle. It should have a rubber boot around it. I suspect the boot went bad causing you to lose the grease.

if your talking about the main axle bolt then you can buy a breaker bar and a large socket but you still have to almost stand on the breaker bar or you can buy an impact wrench cheap at any pawn shop.

I have a crunching sound when I first back up on the left front wheel sounds like I am running over an aluminum can.1997 buick century

If you don't have a beer can in there, take a good look as some one goes from reverse to forward with the brake applied. You might be able to see the problem. I might guess you have an axle issue, but it certainly couold be anything in the front end.
