Clunking noise in front end on 02 Prius

How can you tell if a steering rack is bad in a 2002 Prius. My left strut is leaking and I was told this was the cause of my clunking problem. I am hesitant to think so. My car was recently alligned and I just had my second right front wheel bearing replaced. I still need to replace my front left. The car wanders on the highway. I am thinking that maybe its the steering rack, maybe because I am afraid that it is because the repair is over $2000. How can I make sure my steering rack on a 02 Prius is fine?

if you just had it alligned, and its true, which it shouldnt be cus you have a bad strut and bearings. but if it were and you had new tires, or very good ones still, you took most everything out of the picture. i would fix the things you know that are wrong brfore you replace something that you cant accurately test. the clunk more then not is from your strut, if it sound like its going to come through your car at times.

another thing, if you turn your wheel all the way one way and go in reverse, in a tight circle, very slow, and there is a action like swaying or noise, can also be your cv joint

If you have then engine turned off, look out the window so you can see the front wheel or stand outside the car and turn the wheel very slightly.. if the wheels move straight away then your steering rack should be okay.. also if you put your foot up against the tyre and press really hard and then turn the steering wheel it should be pretty solid...

Another test to give you an indication of your strut top mounts, wheel bearings or steering rack is to jack the front end of the car up and try moving the wheel from side to side and top to bottom, if it moves side to side on both wheels then your steering rack could be at fault or your top mounts.. if youve just had your front right wheel bearing and your right wheel still has movement side to side and up and down it could be the rack, top mount or possible the universal joint..

thats the best advicew i can give really

Clunking accelerating or turning sharply to the left.

Check the front suspension ball joints and steering joints. Check wheel bearings and adjustment. Check shock absorber mounts for condition . Check steering insert condition and top mount rubbers and bearings if McPherson strut set up.. If you have a steering shock absorber then check it's condition and mounting

The steering on my citoen zara 1.6 is making lots of banging noises when turning It pulled left for a while then after some noises returned to normal

your clunking is probably caused by a bad steering u-joint or knuckle at the bottom of the steering column.(at rack and column)

What engine size? how many miles on the vehicle?

1: Leaking Water pump - How do I notice this in the car ?

Typically you will see a lot of dried up coolant around the water pump. If the coolant level gets low enough it will cause the vehicle to over heat and potentially do a lot of damage.

Water pumps are extremely common on these years.

2. Under Steering components it says Rack is Leaking, Passenger bellow torn open.

The rack is the part that turns the wheels left and right. If a bellow is torn and there is fluid coming out of it than the seals in the rack have gone bad. Eventually enough fluid will leak out and cause the power steering to no longer work and possibly ruin the power steering pump.

3. LF Strut /stunt is seeping.

It means that the oil on the strut is starting to leak out. The strut is what absorbs the bumps in the road and holds your tires down on the road. Eventually the strut will loose its ability to do this and the tires will start to cup. It is not uncommon for struts to show signs of leaking and is usually the first indicator that the strut is starting to fail.

Hope that helped.

Everytime i turn the steering wheel i hear a loud clunking noise, i know its not the strut mounts, i know both tie rod ends are brand new within the past year plus they dont make a clunking noise like...

clunking noise may be bad steering rack. either the bolts that hold it to the frame may have worked loose, the center of your vehicle is where the steering racks located, just under the center of floorboard.under dash but on floorboard.make sense? try turning the steering wheel with engine running, place your hand under the radio, but on floorboard, when you turn the steering wheel from side to side,do you feel a thump? if so,then your steering racks loose or bad. the only way to know for sure is to have someone who knows about the steering rack to inspect it visually. thank you for choosing fixya.com

2002 Odyssey. Clunking noise from frontend

Hello! When you had the struts replaced, were the strut mounts also replaced? If not, these are often the source of creaking, or clunking noises. However - this could also be from worn or loose sway bar bushings, or outer tie rod connections. All of these can be surmised by a mechanic within a matter of minutes.

I hope this helps, and thanks for using FixYa!

Strange noise from front drivers side after approaching 30mph.

2 possibilities bearings or damaged rotor. Inspect the rotor, and you can jack the vechicle up just by that tire leaveing the tire free to turn. grab the wheel on the sides try and shake top to bottom in and out, then side to side in and out. If you have play more than likely its your hub bearings.
