Question about 1995 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

Car overheating ok so a couple weeks ago i was driving home when my car began to overheat. I looked around and got some answers and thought I had replaced the thoublesome part which turned out to be an apparently fried cooling relay. The car has worked fine for the past two weeks...no overheating at all. Then today when I was driving home it did it again. I did not put two and two together until today that the last time it had this problem it was pouring rain outside as it was today. I believe it to be a problem with the radiator fans not working because I was able to turn the A/C on and the fan kicked on and the temp went back to normal. What could be causing my car to overheat only when it rains?

Good chance. The temp sensor in the radiator could not be reading correctly. Or the fan control module is on its way out.

I have a 2000 Chrysler LHS with the 3.5 engine. It began overheating and diagnostic code said it was the fan relay. Replaced, and continued to overheat. Water pump and radiator replaced less than 1 year...

Hello Lia, you did all the right things to fix it but there is some thing elise going on ,if your sure that ,thermostat is not in back wards and its not defective (they do get stuck )and fans are running on time the only thing left is the start of a head gasket ,eaven thoe coolant is clear and no coolant in oil, .did you purge all air out of motor, (no joke) you'll see 2 air purge valves on top of motor ,they look like brake bleeder valves, one on right side and one on left side traped air will cause over heating as well.
I really hope this helped you in some way .

Having multiple intermittent problems

I guess the overall answer is yes it could be the ECM.
Code 16 is high or low system battery voltage.
Code 21 and 22 are both for the throttle position sensor.
And code 43 is for the electronic spark control which controls engine spark timing.
The ECM grounds various relays to make things happen such as turning on the cooling fan. So a faulty ECM could cause all of the symptoms. But so could a wiring problem in one of the harnesses.
Especially a ground problem somewhere.
If the alternator suddenly starts overcharging the system the ECM can shut down the car to protect the circuits. Unusual, but possible.
This info may not help much, but somebody is going to have to test the circuits when the engine dies or when the symptoms happen.

If the top hose is hot and the bottom is cold, your definitely not getting circulation. You,ve already done alot of work to this vehicle so you have pretty much answered your own question. About the only thing left is the heater core. Of course, I dont want to be the one to tell you it is definitely the heater core because obviously I am not looking at the vehicle. But If i was a betting man, thats where my money would be.

1995 Diamante overheats on hills.

Hi,
The heating up as you build revs, to me, indicates a partially oped thermostat. If it hasn't been replaced, I would do so. It's inexpensive and easy enough to do. Make sure you get a gasket with it.
The rattling thing is another matter. Do you think it is the water pump that is rattling? Does it ever drip from under your engine all the time?
Just curious...
Hope this helps... Good luck!

1999 Chrysler 300M overheating

I am having the same prob. on 04 300m 83,000 mi. I am a chrysler tech and another tech at my shop had the same problem a week ago. Mine started when i Was on the thruway my guage crept up to 3/4 so i kicked the heat on and it went normal. After stopping I found the water pump went and was leaking bad. I replaced the waterpump timing belt and tensioner pulley. thought it was good untill on a long trip. Noticed temp goin up no leaks this time, coolant full. doesnt overheat with heater on. Actuated fans with DRB3 and both work and are working when car says its overheating. Replaced thermostat and bleed system. thought it was ok untill drove 35mi. suspecting bad wiring plugged radiator or coolant temp sensor. Still driving with heat on low to keep from overheating. any others fix this problem yet?

Overheating engine

O man! You have a major prob!!! The head is warped, will need to be machined, and the list goes on!! If you want to keep this car do consider a rebuilt engine. That is the most frugal way to solve your prob! Sorry Frankster016
