Question about 1995 Honda Passport

Gets warm, dies and won't start

3.2 L V6 - When the engine is cool it will start easily and run extended time until it gets hot (not overheated though). Then, depending on how hot, it will either start and lope until dies or it will not even start at all. I let it cool and it starts just fine and repeats. I have changed fuel filter and checked for water in fuel. I have also ran injector cleaner through it. Any help in troubleshooting is appreciated.

This is most likley not an issue of fuel. this sounds like an ignition module issue. These are all signs of a failing ignition module. On engines with no distributer it will be located under the coils. On engines with distributers it is located on bottom or in bottom of distributer.good luck.

Why does my car die when engine gets hot and restarts when engine cooled


Sorry to hear about that. Your problem is most likely an ignition issue. When the vehicle is cold all the parts (including the coils, ignition module) have "shrunk" so to speak. Then, after the engine runs for a while everything starts to expand if you will. When that happens, connections that make contact when cold no longer do so after the engine warms up. Have it checked.

97 eldorado idles and does not run hot, only when driving car runs hot.


May be its low on coolant or radiator hoses clogged or its thermostat issue,its remaining closed or it can be issue with coolant leaking from somewhere.Or cooling fan not running when when engine gets warm.

There are many possibilities for car overheating.

Faulty thermostat clogged radiator/plugged radiator, radiator hose worn out. Coolant running low. Low coolant pressure. Faulty temperate sensor.

Is there a heat shield on the starter


I don't think there is a heat shield on the starter but, I wouldn't think that would be you're problem. I would try changing the ignition module. It's on the engine block, drivers side, I think. Usually when they are going bad they will shut off engine when they get hot. It won't crank until it cools off. After it cools engine will crank and run good until it gets hot again. Good Luck.

So you attack the overheating problem first before you blow an engine.

Thermostat, fan clutch, water pump, blockage in cooling system or low coolant level are some of the possibilities.
Is the gauge showing hot when it is overheating ?

My 97 gran prix overheated and shut itself. And now won't start. The Atifrz leaked out and engine overheated.


sometimes when an engine gets hot enough it will stop running due to the metal expansion when it is hot.if it cools off it will probably start but don`t run it very long especially without coolant.the thermostat may have seized in the closed position this sometimes happens as when the car is running the temperature flucuates the stat will close and open all the time(won`t close completely).another problem could be a bad head gasket that allowed coolant into the combustion chamber enough that the motor went into what is called hydraulic lock,coolant has filled the combustion chamber enough that the piston won`t move through out its normal travel.i would try changing the thermostat first refill cooling system and let run until the cooling fans have cycled on and off.if it doesn`t overheat and it cranks over when you try to start it then the stat is more than likely the problem.

normally a speed control sensor can solve this problem, but also check the crank senson.

I have a 350 chev, motor, put in a new cam and lifters adjusted lifter, set timing .vacume on carb, problem is when i drive the car and turnit off i have to wait till the motor cool down to start .i am...


I have a '81 Firebired that did the same thing with the factory-issued Flintstone-mobile 3.8L V6. Everything but the starter worked correctly: new 185 thermostat, perfect 50-50 coolant misture, no leaks, etc., but still had to wait 1-2 hours for a cool down.

It may be that your original starter is dying. Your starter relay is over-heating and opening the circuit. You can replace the starter and/or buy a pre-made heat shield for the starter or fab one yourself. Regardless, just remember that the goal is to keep the starter as cool as possible.

To prove this is in fact the problem get the engine hotter than usual in your driveway then shut it off. If it won't start cool it down with a bag of ice (don't burn yourself). Should take less than 5 minutes to cool it to start.
