Question about 1988 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

Will rev up to 6000 and still only be going 25mph.

There we no transmission fluid in it when we got it and it had been driven across town. We were already aware that it had an oil leak. We put 2 quarts of transmission fluid in it when we first got it and another 2 a week later. The oil was ok and we replaced the oil and air filters. A couple days after the second time we put transmission fluid into it, it started acting up. It would rev all the way up to 6000 and only be going 25 mph. We put another quart of transmission fluid in it because it was low, and it worked a little bit better but not much. We are both pretty sure that it's a transmission leak but we want a second opinion before we mess with it. If it is the transmission, can we fix it or do we have to replace it? would appreciate the help. Thanks!

Good chances are that the transmission needs to be replaced. Running the transmission low or without fluid will burn up the clutch pact and burn up the front pump also. With the amount of oil leaking from the transmission where was it leaking from???
Before you replace the transmission, find the leak and repair it. if it's from the transmission not bad since your going to replace it. if it's leaking in the radiator from the cooler, then your going to have to replace the radiator too and flush out your cooling system.
Good luck and hope this helps.

1995 Nissan Altima Stuck in First Gear

1. check transmission fluid level or if you can change the fluid & filter.
2. check throttle position sensor (tps).
3. if fluid level & tps are ok & still not upshifting automatically, temporarily (so you can take it to a transmission specialist) , try to manually shift. starting from dead stop, shift to D1. at about 25mph shift to D2. (be gentle on the accelerator & don't over rev on each gear. release accelerator pedal & don't step on the brakes while shifting from D1 & D2).

Your transmission is slipping is my guess, it is really the only explanation. The only fix is to remove the transmission and rebuild it or replace it with a factory rebuilt unit.

My 1999 freelander has developed a problem this morning, i was driving at approx60 mph, and the engine seemed to gve a small jolt, and now will not pull, the engine revs but no pull, the fastest it will go...

Check your transmission fluid. It sounds like your transmission may have run on empty, and may be fried. Try topping it off with transmission fluid. If this doesn't fix the problem, you may need a transmission rebuild.

If your transmission fluid shows add, how much should you add?

Hello klb.

You should check your transmission fluid after it has been driven and hot.
Also on level ground and running in park.
The fluid level will rise when it is hot so if you add when cold it may overfill.
So if you are checking hot add about a half quart and recheck.

Thank you for using FixYa.

When I start driving, the engine revs high and barely goes anywhere. it goes slowly up till 25mph and then is fine. It just started today

I believe '02 rodeo's have buttons for power mode and winter mode located between the shifter and the flip up console. You may have accidentally activated winter mode which cuts power to the drive wheels for driving in ice and snow.If so look on the instrument cluster and "winter mode" will be lit in green, simply push the button again to deactivate it while in PARK.Hope this helps ,good luck.

2003 ford focus... possible transmission problem.. or electrical?

Overdrive is a lock up within the transmission. The other "gears" are fluid and belt driven. So, could be that the sensor that allows the overdrive to "lock" is dirty/faulty. A transmission shop should be able to tell you in a heart beat.
