This solution is 6 months after, so you've probably fixed the car, but here goes anyway.
The fuel system at engine must be free from vacuum leaks, to work.
Replace the hose. You won't hear the pump until the engine turns over....and then there's too much noise to hear it! No gas to motor is usually the fuel pump relay. Pumps don't fail very often.

Note:
Only a high pressure service valve is used for A/C system servicing. A low pressure service valve is not installed. Perform all A/C system service (ie. discharging, evacuating and charging) through the high pressure service valve only.

The check engine light is on and the code is narrow passage in EGR. Would like step by step for checking valve and removing and cleaning if possible. 1996 A6 Quattro Avant

Disconnect first the vacuum line from the EGR valve. Connect a hose to the EGR and cover it or **** on the hose.

IF the engine stumbles the passages are ok, you may just want to check the vacuum lines or the sensors itself. Otherwise try cleaning the EGR with cleaning spray before replacing.

hey i got a audi a6 there is a hose clamp behind the bumper cover you'll have to look under the car in that corner. see if the hose came loose or the clip cam off of loose. you may have to remove your bumper cover to have better access to the hose.

I too have the same problem on my 2005 1.8t B6. I noticed a hole in the breather hose coming off the valve cover that runs to another port under the intake manifold. I have the hoses on order and should be here on Wednesday. I'll post again if that fixes my problem.

Starting problem on my audi a6 2.8 quattro,,, i need help

Sounds like the gas presser valve or weak fuel pump. When it dose it again turn the switch on and leave it on for about 3 mins. and see if it will start. If it dose I would say the pump is weak.

Coolant in coolant reservoir did not fill low level in radiator

if there was an air lock this would not allow the reservoir to bleed out into system.
it sounds like it wasn't fully bled when the new radiator was put it, it can be tricky sometimes to get all of the air out.

Any comparable car should work. Your car is a 98, so you would have to stick with Audi/VW cars that have the 30v V6 (98-01.5). The 97 and earlier years used an older 12v V6 and those aren't compatible. It's unlikely that the 1.8T models would work either. You'd have to look for A4, A6, and Passat cars in the model range I mentioned, and you may find that if you have a quattro model, your replacement would have to come from a quattro (Audi) or 4motion (VW) car as well. Try to find a donor car with your same drivetrain (30v V6, auto/stick - whichever you have, and 2wd/4wd, whichever you have).

To tell at a glance which engine is which, the 30v has black covers on the valve covers that say "5V" (for five valves per cylinder). The older 12v cars I believe actually say "12v" on them.

'87 Audi 4000 Quattro - vacuum advance problems.

On the vacuum line that operates the advance on the dizzy, there is a plastic piece that controls the upshift light, it has a two terminal connector and an adjusting screw on one side. Today I bypassed this piece, my car revs willingly past th 4000 mark and continues to build power. I assume this piece or the small hose it uses was leaking. Sweet.
