ok sounds familiar my friend. I want you to take a look at the harmonic balancer. this is the large pulley on the bottom. you may need to remove the tire to take a closer look. the Harmonic balancer is not completly steel it has rubber ring that circles the balancer. sometimes this oring fails causing a misalignment of the belt. you can see it here

if you are going to do it yourself I suggest getting a harmonic Balancer pulley puller.

    let me know

Serpentine belt keeps shredding on a 01 grand am. changed 2 of the pulleys.

Check the water pump, alternator, and a/c compressor pulleys for play and proper alignment. Replace any item that has play in the bearings.

I have a 93 k2500 5.7 gas Chevy cheyenne that was squealing so we changed the tenssioner and pulley then changed the idler pulley along with the belt so far it has threw three belts and shredding them like...

The tensioner pulley moves back and forth to keep belt tight..the idle pulley just sits there and spins..none should have play at bearing. If u misplaced a washer/spacer it could cause the misaligned issue that is shredding belt..

1988 V6 safari van serpentine belt comes off and gets shredded how to fix

you need to wire brush your pulleys so all grooves are clean and see if one of your engine components that run off the belt are loose or have a bad bearing good luck

What would cause the belt to shred

A locked pulley. Check to make sure they all turn free before you replace the belt.

Have had belt replaced twive in a week think its the alternator belt.Cars immediately runs hot when it breaks. What could be causing it to do this?

Before installing a new belt, you should be able to spin all pulleys by hand (except the crankshaft pulley). If their good, install belts while checking to make sure the pulleys are Lined up properly with each other. A miss- aligned pulley will shred a belt in no time.

Need a timing belt diagram for ford ranger 3.2L engine

Do you mean timing belt or serpentine belt? The timing belt on vehicles only goes on one way - over 2 or 3 pulleys with a possible tensioner holding the proper tension on it.
The serpentine belt is the outer, visible belt that runs the water pump, alternator, power steering pump and air conditioner pulleys with another one or 2 pulleys in there just for fun. There should be a routing diagram for that belt on a decal attached to the underside of the hood - or on the radiator shroud. While it may seem to go on other ways it is crucial to install it correctly. Compare the old belt (if it is available) to the new one for proper length. The correct routing of the proper belt makes sure that all the equipment pulleys are rotating in the proper direction.

Do you have a diagram on routing the drive belt?

The diagram on the right in this link provides the exact diagram/pic. for your car. The link is to a site that explains how to convert earlier NG models (which had an extra center idler pulley) to a shorter belt, ala the newer models such as yours which had eliminated this idler. See also, this site for additional information. Another diagram is here with part numbers for the pulleys and the belt. This is about a one hour job to replace the belt and one or two pulleys. Ensure the pulleys are lined up correctly to avoid throwing the new belt when you start it up.

Belt burst on 1998 dodge grand cravan sport 3.3 l Engine

Hi my name is Allen!

To gain access to the tensioner that holds the belt into place you will need to remove the splash gard behind the right front wheel, removal of the wheel is not neccessary unless you think it would be easier for you.

NEXT: you need to check all the pulleys to make sure the belt did not come off because of one of the pulleys gone bad. You can check them by grabbing each one and see if it wobbles and also make sure it turns freely. If the pulley's are OK then go to the next step. If not contact me for repair procedure!

Next: You will need to route the belt over each of the pulleys the way they are routed on the diagram under the hood, its best to draw out the diagram on a piece of paper to have it near you when routing the belt.

NOTE: You will need a tensioner tool which you may be able to borrow at autozone or some other auto parts store near you. Ask the guy to explain to you how it works.

Once you have routed the belt over all pulleys but one, then you will need to use the tensioner tool to pull the tensioner back and then slip the belt over the last pulley, once you have done this look at all the pulleys to make sure the belt is fitting in the groove area properly. some times the belt will rest outside the groove area on the side of the pulley. That's it!

91 Jeep Cherokee Loredo/serpintine belt travels and shreds inside part of belt! Has new water pump and idle pulley(had a new belt!).

Possibly who ever replaced the water pump did not line up one of the pulleys or an idler correctly. If it is not spaced correctly the serpentine belt will not follow the grooves in the pulley. This will cause the belt to jump out of the grooves and jump track and rub on the pulley and shred it within a few minutes or seconds depending on how badly it is misaligned.Check the alignment on the pulleys and the routing path of the belt. Both must be correct in order to work properly.
