SOURCE: 1991 Volvo 740GL Speedometer

I remove two panel underneath the steering column. The first panel is removed using a 10 mm socket. The second panel is removed using a torx socket (can't remember the size). Removing these two panels gives you room to get to the clip on speedomter. Looking at the speedometer, you should see two rectangular holes on each side of the speedometer cover. I use a awl to push in the clip (you could use a screwdriver). Looking underneath the dash, you should be able to see the clip you are pushing on with the awl. I take my 2nd awl and put it behind the clip. I get the left side to release. One the speedometer cover releases, you can see the speedometer. You will see the 4 torx screws (t20) and two smaller clips holding the speedometer. All that is left is the wiring. (I take a sharpie pen and mark one of my wire locations on the speedometer. I am not sure what it does. It is a single wire.)

If everything keeps going like that then it sounds like its a problem with the onboard computer. The computer controls all the guages and would explain why they all fail at the same time.

SOURCE: Speedometer Conversion

personally i find that that is a waste of time any money for the reason that he should know or be taught the conversions such as 60 mph to 100 km/h and the basics and it probable would not be cheap if you want to get it done right.

Speedometer tachometer temp guage not working 2001firebird. All fuses are good

The sending units for those gages are not hard-wired to instrument cluster. That info goes to pcm. The pcm then sends serial data to instrument cluster telling the cluster what to do with the gages. If some gages work and some don't, I suspect the instrument cluster. Some instrument clusters are able to do a self-test. I don't know the models years involved? Even so you would need a scanner with by-directional controls to try the self-test. Don't take my work for it, check around.

I have a 2007 Grand Prix. It looks like it is over heating on the gauge alittle bit. I also have no air conditioning. Should I replace the thermostat?

How many miles on it ? Has it ever been done before ? Mite as well have cooling system flushed too . New antifreeze , I think 100,000 miles it should be done at . GM had problems with stepper motors in the instrument ,these step motors control the gauge's . Have had an instrument cluster problems ? Bad step motors 03 to 06 but who's to say some where not put in 07 . I replaced a few instrument clusters because gauges not reading right. We can test this at the dealer with factory tech 2 scan tool . Do the cooling fans turn on ?

'95 Lincoln town car. Husband was driving uphill and the digital dash suddenly went dark. Radio is working and a/c is not. Exterior light still working and so are interior lights besides the dash

Could be a bad wire possibly chaffing or grounding out to to another wire or frame. Check your fuses. You may want to pull the dash out and check that wiring as well

What is the location of fuse for speedometer on 2o04 ford explorer

Speedometer The instrument cluster receives the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) signal from the powertrain control module (PCM) through the standard corporate protocol (SCP) communication network. The instrument cluster monitors the VSS input from the PCM and commands the speedometer with a corresponding movement of the pointer.
  • The speedometer/odometer is inoperative
  • Circuitry.
  • Powertrain control module (PCM).
  • Instrument cluster.
  • Go To Pinpoint Test L .
  • Use the recorded instrument cluster DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
  • Are any instrument cluster DTCs recorded?
If instrument cluster U1123 is retrieved, REFER to Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual to continue diagnosis.

For all other instrument cluster DTCs, REFER to the Instrument Cluster Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index.

For inoperative speedometer, GO to L2 .

  • Connect the diagnostic tool.
  • Key in ON position.
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
  • Select the instrument cluster speedometer active command.
  • Trigger the speedometer and scroll in increments of 10% while monitoring the speedometer. The speedometer should increase in increments of approximately 20 km/h (12 mph) for each 10% change.
  • Does the speedometer increase within specifications?
REFER to Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual to continue diagnosis.

  • Key in ON position.
  • Monitor the compass, air temperature and message center functions of the integrated circuit display.
  • Do the compass, air temperature or message center displays operate correctly?
GO to L4 .

  • Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present?
INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to Instrument Cluster in this section. TEST the system for normal operation.

The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. There isn't a fuse just for the speedometer , there are four fuse for the whole instrument cluster . If one of these fuse's were burnt you would have more then just the speedometer not working ! You need to have a scan tool to find out what is up ! you could need a new cluster ! Is the check engine light on ? if not wouldn't think vehicle speed sensor bad , besides speed info for speedometer PCM uses for transmission shift points ! Good luck ,hope this helps !

How do i replace the small bulb behind the speedometer/odometer?

You have to remove the instrument cluster cover and instrument cluster and disconnect the wiring harness(es) that connect the cluster to your vehicles computer, aka ecu or pcm. The bulbs are readily available at any auto parts store.

Good Luck
