How does firing order help a mechanic?

When you replace plug wires, you need to know the firing order or be careful not to mix the wires up... If you get the firing order wrong, the engine may not start or if it does start, will run very badly.

To avoid confusion, remove and tag the spark plug wires one at a time, for replacement.
If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug towers in relation to the engine. For this reason it is imperative that you label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. If the current wiring does not match, make notes to reflect how your engine is wired.

I need to know the order that the plugs/wires go to the coil.

You would need to give us the Model Year and engine size for us to give you an accuract firing order. The web site below has lots of different engines for your car with there correct firing orders. again you need to know the engine you have for your car to get the right order.

    Good Luck

I need to know the firing order to replace wires

No, if you replace one wire at a time then you do not need the firing order. If you have already removed all the wires, then post which engine you have and I will post the firing order.

I have a 1998 VW jetta I'm trying to change the spark plugs. I know the wiring order and the firing order. I just don't know how to tell if the engine is in the right position to be lined up with the...

If your trying to change spark plugs remove one wire from a plug, replace that plug, reinstall the wire onto that plug and move on to the next plug. You don;t need to worry about firing order unless you plan on changing the wires or the cap and rotor. Even if you where to change the wires if you did them one at a time than the new ones would be in the exact same place as the old ones and there is nothing to worry about,

I need to know what the order on the distributor cap in for the plugs are I know the firing order I just go the last two wires mixed up on the drivers side so I know it's 1-3-5 but where are the locations...

You need to determin which direction the rotor button turns when the engine is running. Take the cap off and get someone to bump the starter . Watch the rotor. If it turns counter clockwise the fireing order will follow its order counter clockwise on the distributer .In other words # 1 wire on the distributer goes to # 1 spark plug. Then the next wire counting counterclockwise goes to # 3 plug . Follow the firing around the distributer for all the wires. counter clockwise is the oppisit to the rotation of the hands on a clock .
