Setting the positions on the cam gears on those is not terribly difficult, it involves locking both gears in place to get them in position. It is a bit complicated though and you really need a manual like haynes or chiltons in order to get it right. (if you don't, you will destroy the valvetrain and possibly the pistons when you start it) If buying parts, I strongly recommend you do not use anything made by SA Gear...they have no quality control and will not back up there stuff...Even if you do it correctly you can still loose the engine. Take care in making sure the tensioner is working correctly, and follow all directions. there are no "short-cuts" on this one!

How to set the timing on a 1997 pontiac grand am 2.4 twin cam ?

ok after removing all the parts out of the way and the damper off make sure its on number 1 and the mark on the damper is inline with the mark on the block is at TDC then you get a long bolt and insert it in the whole to the bottom of the cam sprocket intake and exhaust then set the chain tensioner make sure you hear it click but the new one come set now after you would of put on the chain rotate the engine by hand and make sure the tensioner jumps out to the chain then put everything back up and start your engine

If 3100 engine is running smooth could the cam shaft sensor be bad in a pontiac grand prix

Not CAM or Crank angle sensor.. Try check supply fuel line pressure n spark plug n ignition coil output.. the ignition coil output should be blue spark n spark jump at least half inch.. But be careful coz its hi tension..

I took old timing chain off my 2001 Mercury Marquis 4.6 and something moved, either one of the cam gears or both. I set the timing on the crank shaft to top dead center, but now I can't get the m

what you have to do is clean the chain very well you are looking for 2 links that are different colors than the rest (bronze colored ) count the links between the two rotate the cam 2 12:00 with the dowel pin up or the dot on the edge of the pulley put the chain on with the links on each mark and set the tensioners in place

No voltage on crank sensor grand am 2001 2.4

The crank and cam sensors produce ac voltage that is sent to the computer. There are magnets or components on the crank and cam that the sensors "read".
The problem could be the harness between the sensors and the computer, or a mechanical problem like a timing chain or gear.

Timing specs on 2002 grand am 2.2 liter dual over head cam wont to know how to time the top 2 cam

rotate the engine till the crankshaft sprocket mark lines up with the second silver link on the chain, should @ the 5:00 position. on the right sprocket or the intake sprocket align the intake diamond with the copper link should set at the 2:00 position, and the triangle on the exhaust sprocket should line up with the other silver link in the chain approxamately at the 10:00 position. Once you get it in time, it is a good idea to put a bar on the crank and turn the engine over one complete revolution, just to make sure you got it timed right. hope this helps

How to and where are witness marks to reinstall timing chain on a 2000 Pontiac Grand AM 2.4

YOU WILL SEE A HOLE IN THE CAM GEAR THAT A 3/8 BOLT WILL FIT INTO. PUT A BOLT INTO THE HOLES OF BOTH CAM GEARS. THEN LINE UP THE CRANK PULLEY KEYWAY AT ABOUT 12 O'CLOCK WITH THE MARK ON THE ENGINE BLOCK.

MAKE SURE TO COMPRESS THE CHAIN TENSIONER AND RELEASE IT WHEN THE CHAIN IS IN POSITION.

Timing chain setting for 89 Firebird

Yes, there are two timing marks, one on the crank gear, and one on the cam gear. The crank gear mark needs to be at the top, and the cam gear mark needs to be at the bottom (lined up w. one another).
