Do you have library card? might be your local public library subscribes to an online research database like mine does. the one i can use is called auto repair reference center. it's not as comprehensive as mitchell or alldata but it's free. the catch is you have to get to it through the library website and you have to have a valid library card number to get in. hope that helps.

Rear end went out on 2000 tundra need instructions how to install it


Block the front tires, jack up the rear end. Remove driveshaft from rear end. Loosen but do not remove the leaf springs and the shock absorbers. Remove the brake lines and the emergency brake cable. Return vehicle to ground and finish removing the leaf springs and the shock absorbers. The vehicle will have to be slightly raised to do this. The other option is to replace the ring and pinion as a unit which requires a completely different set of instructions. What will you be doing, replacing the entire axle and housing or just the ring and pinion?

Rear axle has side to side play in rear end.


stop doing donuts HA! check axle bearings and suspension ,ex.... sway bar bushings, shocks and leaf spring mounts.

How do I change the rear differential?


jack it up so the rear axle is off the ground. unhook the ebrake cables at the vehicle unbolt the rear driveline remove the rear wheels unbolt the rear shocks with the jack under the center of the rear end, disconnect any anti lock wiring plugs remove if it has leaf springs remove the u bolts that bolt the rear end to the spring by taking off the nuts from the bottom. lift out rear assembly . If it has springs remove the springs after the shocks are unmounted from the rear axle. piece of cake reverse the procedure

I'm trying to service the rear differential but can't find the plug 2 put my gear oil in...help pls...


Look up high, on the differential case. Fill the gear oil there.

When I looked it up on my online resource it says there is a vent hose at the top of the differential, #7.

Rear Axle Axle Housing Assembly Removal & Installation To Remove:

  1. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle safely using jackstands under the frame. Position a floor jack or a second set of jackstands to support the rear axle housing. If a floor jack is being used, take care when removing the U-bolts to keep the axle from suddenly dislodging.
  2. Remove the rear wheels and drums for clearance and to remove some weight from the axle housing.
  3. If equipped, remove the axle vibration dampener.
  4. Matchmark and remove the rear driveshaft from the pinion flange. Either remove the shaft completely from the vehicle or support it aside from the undercarriage using safety wire, but DO NOT allow the shaft to hang from the slip joint.
  5. Remove the shock absorber-to-axle housing retainers, then swing the shock absorbers away from the axle housing.
  6. Disconnect the brake lines from the axle housing clips and the backing plates (wheel cylinders). NOTE: When disconnecting the brake lines from the wheel cylinders, immediately plug or cap the lines to prevent system contamination or excessive fluid loss.
  7. If applicable, unplug the speed sensor connectors at the junction block.
  8. Disconnect the parking brake cable(s).
  9. Disconnect the axle housing-to-spring U-bolt nuts, washers. U-bolts and the anchor plates.
  10. Remove the vent hose from the top of the axle housing.
  11. Remove the axle with the help of an assistant by moving it to clear the leaf spring, or if desired, the leaf springs can be disconnected from the frame at the rear end to lower the axle down and back, but first refer to the leaf spring procedures for information regarding spring installation and removal.
To Install:
  1. With the help of an assistant, carefully position the rear axle into the vehicle.
  2. Connect the vent hose to the axle housing.
  3. Be sure the housing is properly positioned on the leaf spring, then loosely install the U-bolts, anchor plates, washers and nuts.
    • Tighten the U-bolt nuts in a cross pattern to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) to make sure everything is evenly seated. Then tighten the nuts in steps to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) on 1994-95 models or 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) on 1996 and later models.
  4. Remove the caps from the brakes lines then connect the lines and secure them to the axle housing.
  5. If removed, connect the parking brake cable(s).
  6. If applicable, attach the speed sensor connectors to the junction block.
  7. Align and install the driveshaft assembly. Refer to the procedure earlier in this section for details.
  8. Install the shock absorbers to the lower mounts, then tighten the mount nuts.
  9. If equipped, install the axle vibration dampener.
  10. Install the brake drums and the tire/wheel assemblies.
  11. Properly refill the brake master cylinder and bleed the hydraulic brake system.
  12. Check the fluid level in the rear axle assembly and add, as necessary. Make sure the vehicle is level when checking and adding fluid.
  13. Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the truck.

I need to add 80-90W oil in my rear diff, however, I can't seem to find the plug to pull to add in said oil. can anyone help? What am i missing?

My rear end has dropped and looks crazy and will not lift


Do you have:
1. Shocks and Leaf Springs?
If so: the Shocks could be "shot" and/or broken or completely discharged. OR the Leaf Springs Retainers or the Leaf Springs have broken. The Retainers should have two (2) bolts holding braces which hold the multiple leafs of the Leaf Springs together. Check these. Also you have bushings bolted then welded to the frame that will need to be checked.
2. Struts with Coils (Springs)?
If so: the Struts could be "shot, and/or broken or completely discharged. The Coils (Springs) could be broken of dislocated.
3. Coils (Springs) without Struts?
If so: the Coils (Springs) could be broken or dislocated.
4. Independent Bar Suspension?
If so: the independent bars could be bent, broken or dislocated from their frame connections with the frame.
5. Solid Axle?
If so: the Axle could be bent, broken or dislocated from their frame connections with the frame.
Since you cannot lift the vehicle, I am assuming you are using the jack under the axle to lift? This would point to the Axle/Bars being broken.

Was an excessive load (weight) put on the back of the SUV lately?

If you can't lift the rear of the vehicle, jack-up and properly support the front then jack-up and support the middle towars the rear of the vehicle to gain access to the rear of the vehicle for a better look.
However while doing this if the rear starts rising: keep a careful eye on the rear tires to see if they are going lower than what they would normally go when you are jacking-up the rear, especially with a broken Axle or Bars. THIS COULD CAUSE THE BROKEN OR DISLOCATED PARTS TO FURTHER BREAK OR CAUSE OTHER CONNECTING PARTS TO FAIL AND BREAK OR COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE REST OF THE SURROUNDING AREAS OF THE CAR. I have seen an Axle and Bars that were broken "pierce" into the body of the vehicle because they were not carefully watching.

Rear spring shock is broken on my pontiac montana van, year make 2002,is it easy to fix or how much will it cost,thank`s


I usually charge a base price on shocks and struts.to change shocks I charge around 30.00 or 40.00 dollars labor per pair.struts i charge 65.00 per pair.i'm cheeper than most guys because of the rural small town i live in here in alabama.but it may be your leaf spring not real sure by the discription,you could mean the shock,or the strut but it could mean the leaf spring which i think montanas have a shock and leaf spring set up not struts.i can't pull up my picture in my head too clearly,i've seen underneath hundreds of those vans just can't remember.hope i helped you with a price,don't let any body rip you off on the labor cause shocks are fairly easy to change.

Axle, leaf springs, shocks


Replacing those items are pretty much "see it do it" repairs. Just remember that axles need to be supported by a floor jack so you can lower them after bolts have been removed, and body needs to be well supported with jackstands so it does not follow as stuff is being lowered. When changing a differential, gear ratio must be an exact match to one at other end. You will need lots of wd40 and some good solid 1/2" drive sockets and breaker bars to get hardware loose.

I need to know how to get to the rear suspension (tower)

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Spring Rear
Removal
  1. Position a hoist under the rear axle housing, and raise the vehicle. Refer to Section 00-02 . Place jackstands under frame side rails.
  1. Remove rear stabilizer bar as outlined.
  1. Disconnect the lower studs of the two shock absorbers from the mounting brackets on the rear axle assembly .
  1. Unsnap the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit (2A635) from RH upper arm retainer before lowering the rear axle assembly .
  1. Lower the hoist and axle housing until the rear springs are released.
  1. Remove rear spring and rear spring center mounting insulators (5741) from vehicle.

Shock Absorber Removal
Raise the vehicle on a hoist. 1. To assist in removing the upper attachment on shock absorbers using a plastic dust tube, place an open end wrench on the hex stamped into the dust tube's metal cap. For shock absorbers with a steel dust tube, simply grasp the tube to prevent stud rotation when loosening the retaining nut.
  1. Remove the shock absorber retaining nut, washer, and insulator assembly from the stud on the upper side of the frame. Discard nut. Compress the shock absorber to clear the hole in the frame, and remove the inner insulator and washer from the upper retaining stud.
  2. Remove the self-locking retaining nut, and disconnect the shock absorber lower stud from the mounting bracket on the rear axle tube.
  3. Perform Shock Absorber Checks. Refer to Section 04-00 to determine shock absorbers performance.
Installation
  1. Properly prime the new shock absorber . Refer to Section 04-00 , Shock Absorber Checks.
  1. Place the inner washer and rear spring insulator (5536) on the upper retaining stud, and position the shock absorber so that the upper retaining stud enters the hole in the frame. While holding the shock absorber in this position, install a new rear spring insulator , washer and nut assembly on the upper side of the upper frame. Be sure to seat the rear spring insulator in the frame attaching hole. Tighten nut to 34-46 Nm (25-34 lb-ft).
  1. Extend the shock absorber , and place the lower stud in the mounting bracket hole on the rear axle assembly housing. Install a new self-locking retaining nut. Tighten nut to 76.5-103.5 Nm (56-76 lb-ft).
  1. Lower vehicle.

Removal
Refer to the illustration in Description and Operation. NOTE: To improve rear axle assembly noise and vibration concerns, the rear suspension should be fastened to the frame and rear axle assembly at the curb height position.
NOTE: If one rear suspension lower arm requires replacement, also replace the opposite rear suspension lower arm .

  1. Mark rear suspension shock absorber relative to protective sleeve with the vehicle in a static, level ground condition.
  1. Remove rear stabilizer bar as outlined.
  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist, and place jackstands under the rear axle assembly . Refer to Section 00-02 .
  1. Lower the hoist until the shock absorbers are fully extended to relieve rear spring pressure.
  1. Support rear axle assembly under differential pinion nose as well as under rear axle assembly .
  1. Remove and discard the lower arm pivot bolt and nut from the axle bracket. Then, disengage the rear suspension lower arm from the bracket.
  1. Remove and discard the pivot bolt and nut from the frame bracket, and remove the rear suspension lower arm .

  1. Raise the vehicle, and support the frame side rails with jackstands. Refer to Section 00-02 .
  2. Support the rear axle assembly .
  3. Lower the rear axle assembly , and support the rear axle assembly under differential pinion nose as well as under rear axle assembly .
  4. Unsnap parking brake rear cable and conduit from upper arm retainer.
  5. Remove and discard the nut and bolt retaining the rear suspension arm and bushing to the rear axle assembly housing. Disconnect the rear suspension arm and bushing from the housing.
  6. Remove and discard the nut and bolt that secures the rear suspension arm and bushing to the frame bracket, and remove the rear suspension arm and bushing . If upper arm rear bushing is to be replaced, use Suspension Bushing Service Set T79P-5638-A and Rear Axle Control Arm Bushing Tools T86P-5638-AH and the following procedure:
  7. Place the upper arm rear bushing remover tool in position, and pull bushing out. Using Suspension Bushing Service Set T79P-5638-A install bushing assembly into bushing ear of rear axle assembly.

Removal
  1. Raise vehicle on hoist, and place jackstands under the frame side rails. Refer to Section 00-02 .

  1. Disconnect rear stabilizer bars from rear stabilizer bar link and bushing (5C488) . Remove bolts and stabilizer bar bracket (5486) retaining rear stabilizer bar to rear axle assembly .

ok what you have is just a multi leaf leaf spring. in the middle of the leaf where the axle should be a bolt that holds them together. you need to check the U bolts that hold the axle to the spring. there has to be a reason it moved . check the leaf spring for a broken leaf. i would recomend getting new Ubolts. and when you put it back together make sure you use the bolt that holds the leaves together as the center .
