Question about 2004 Ford Explorer
My nearest Ford dealer says my clutchpacks woren or bad I find this hard to beleave at only 54000 miles I would like change the rearend oil & adative before I send $900.00 is there any thing I need to know before removing the drain plug (springs behind it or any electronics) why I'am asking is the drain plug looks some what large to be just a drain plug thank you for help Can someone please tell me what kind of oil and additive I have to put on my front and rear axle 2004 explorer 4.6L AWD? I have a sound coming from it as if the truck has blocking differential activated and it has not this feature as it is a AWD.
I'm not 100% sure on your vehicle but on all the differentials I've changed the oil on the plug always seems to be very large. I don't know if it is because the oil is so thick and it makes it come out easier or what but I just did my Trooper and it was a quite large socket I used to get the plug out. I've never had springs or anything behind them. As far as an additve I would ask the guys at your local auto parts store about what you need for an AWD since I've only ever done 4WD but what I use is K&W Products/7 oz. Posi-Trac Gear Oil Additive which you can get at AutoZone for like $5. Hope this helps and good luck. Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa

Nothing behind plug. Use a good quality lube and positraction additive available an most parts stores. After it's changed make a series of tight circles in both directions to free sticking clutches.
