Question about 1998 Ford Windstar

1 Answer

1998 Ford Windstar fuse problem - dome light stays on etc

My Windstar has two real funky electrical quirks.
1. The dome ligth will just stay on
Most times after carrying passengers that open the side door or the back door - the "open door indicator" on the dashboard won't turn off even after the doors are closed. If I don't pull a fuse, the insight lights will stay on until the battery is drained.
2. Locks all jump up after I lock it
When I try to lock the doors by locking pressing the "lock doors button" on the driver-side door, all the doors will lock for 1.5 seconds and then all of them will unlock at the same time (as if the car was pulling a trick on me). I can only lock the car by pressing that same button on the passenger side.

I can live with #2, but the lights staying on is a real hassle.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Thanks for your help.

I guess I'll figure it out when I get back to my car, but is the panel I need to work on located in the door or in the body of the vehicle?

Have you checked the switches inside your doors for damage?

You most likely have a bad door ajar switch- the door panel has to be removed to access it, its on the door latch- you can unplug them this will take care of the batt drain prob.as for the locks it may be a switch problem- most ford vehicles will not let you lock the vehicle from the driver's door when it's open to prevent locking the keys in.

the door panel is the interior cover on the door- they can be a pain to pull off.

Hi. I have a 2002 Ford Windstar. The ABS and Emergency brake lights come on often and stay on. I had the brakes checked and they are fine. It had some quirks, like the radio turning on or off by itself,...

Get a good manual with the schematics in it for starters is you are going to try to DIY. The rear light problems are from a common defective part call a REM Rear Electronics Module. Located in the right rear corner behind the jack access panel. The front electrical problems will most likely be from....... can you guess?---- Yes a FEM Front Electronics module. Fords better idea!
Both can be purchased new but will require the old units info be downloaded from it and up loaded to the new ones. (dealer) $$$
Salvage yard parts will be a direct fit and cheaper just make sure the part numbers match.
Good luck

Hi!!!

If your hazard lights turn on but do not blink, replace flasher.

If your hazard lights don't turn on, check hazard/stop/turn fuse(s).

Let me know how it worked out, good luck.

The warning bell and dome lights come on when I slow down as in stopping at a stop sign. The dome lights also stay on after I stop close doors and leave car. They remain on for up to an hour or so.

this is almost alwys caused by defective door coutesy light/door ajar switch contacts is the sliding doors of the van, have done dozens at work for this problem.

1998 escort zx2 dome light stays on when switch is set for door; all other indicators, chime for key in ignition etc seem OK. Light works normally in switch on and off positions.

It should stay on for about 30 seconds and go off. Otherwise, the car is 11 years old, so find a switch position which does not drain the battery.

Door ajar and dome lghts

Probably a door switch, check them first. Go to each door with a can of penatrating oil, find the switch in the jam, give it a shot and work the button manually until they're all freed up. Watch the light while you do this to eliminate which one's causing the problem. Please post your results.
