Question about 1998 Ford F150 Regular Cab

1 Answer

Electrical Problems I stopped at a gas station and shut off the engine and when I tried to start the truck the battery was dead. I jumped it and got it started right away and drove it home. On the way home the voltage gauge was reading about 12 volt or in the middle. I change the battery and took it out for a long ride. During the ride the vehicle showed signs that the battery was draining. The gauges, windows, lights, and all other electronics in the vehicle stopped working. The truck kept running but had a lack of power. Alternator? Does this truck have a voltage regulator? Have any ideas? Thanks for your help. AL

It was very helpful. My last question is that I have heard that to check to see if your alternator is working to disconnect it while the vehicle is running. If it stays running it is working and if it stalls it's not. I can see that by checking the voltage it would tell you if it is functioning properly. Thanks again for your help. AL

YES! I hope I will not need your advice in the future, but I am sure I will be back. Thanks again, AL

Al, this truck has a regulator locted inside the altenator, it also has a relay located in the power distribution box under the hood, see your owners manual for exact location, to verify an no charging problem, start the truck and measure the voltage at the battery, it should read 13.5v-14.5v, if not then the altenator is not working, most common problem is regulator failure requiring altenator replacement, hope this helps, let me know

I have had battery and alternator checked, both are good. Battery was dead, jumped car, started and ran fine. Drove 30 minutes, shut off and sat for 2 hours. Started fine again, just went to gas station...

Most likely you have a bad battery. The second option is that you have a faulty wiring and there is a constant load that takes a lot of power, but it does not make a short circuit. Check the electrical relays, maybe it's in them.

89 chevy shuts off after 30 sec of being jump start

I suggest that you have a load test done on the battery as from your description there is a dead cell . Coming to a stop is when the engine is idling and the output of the alternator is below that required to supply current to the ignition system. With a dead battery and jump starting it is possible that the CPU program is corrupted so after you fit a good battery use a scanner to reset the CPU program

It is possible that the Battery is dead, if you turn the ignition & the engine does not turn over try getting a jump

If you havent replaced the battery I would start there. If the battery has a dead cell in it then it will effectively remove the charge that your alternator is putting out causing your vehicle to stop running because it has no power. I would jump start the car without the battery hook up and remove the cables and see if it runs that way. If it does you have a bad battery.

95 F150 wont crank

the starter should be replaced. The solenoid is kikcing the pinion out but there is no contact being made to turn the starter motor. I have the exact same truck and before i changed the starter used the old starter tap trick. Tap the starter casing with a hammer and it should start turning again. hope this was helpful for you. Good luck.

Battery not holding charge

From initial indications, your analysis is correct. Pls replace the battery. Of course the only way to validate this is with a new battery.

The electrical system of most vehicles could be divided into two, the charging system and the load. The load would be from the headlights, to the computer and all the electrical consumer of the car. If there is anything wrong with any of the load, the fuse would be blown. On the other hand, the charging system is as its name implies, restores the electrical energy of the battery once the engine is running. If something is wrong (battery not charging), then there would be a warning indicator in the dashboard.

Since you have not reported any of the fuses blown or any of your electrical devices not functioning nor any warning lights, then in all likelihood, it is just the battery.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
