likely you have a chain not a belt (less likely to "jump time). Do a compression test to make sure you don't have a burned valve, If you have any ticking noise in engine could also have a worn cam lobe. Ignition cross-fire can also cause backfire.

Sounds like the timing belt, unless you recently changed you spark plugs and put the boots/wires on the wrong plug. May seem silly but I've seen it done before.

What is the correct placement for plug wirs on a 1999 pontiac grand am se 6 cylinder. i just cahnged the spark plugs but when i sit at a light in drive it jerks. what could be the problem.

If the wires were connected incorrectly the idling would be very rough while sitting. The very front of the engine starting at the passenger side is 1,3,5
The side toward the firewall is 2,4,6
Start from the passenger side on all numbers above. HINT....Also the intake has the firing number by each cylinder

Malibu was idleing and I heard a loud pop like a belt broke, the belt is still in tact how when I start the car it back fires and is not running at its full compasity

Well the belt you see if the accessory belt not the timing belt/chain. It soulds like you may have jumped some teeth inside the engine or snapped that belt.

99 pontiac grand am 2.4 timing chain

Yes, that model is an interference motor. Most of the pontiac grang am's and grand prix's are. Sorry, I'm sure that was the answer you didn't want to hear.

Will not start

Have your battery charged and load tested to make sure it's OK. Then check the charging system and alternator drive belt for tension and condition. If car won't staqrt after charge, you may need to remove alternator to have it tested on a bench. Otherwise, put a volt meter across both terminals. With engine off, volts should be 12 or higher. Running should be 13,5-14V running with all lights, heater and A?C on should not drop lower than 12.8v.Low readings running indicate a bad alternator. If everything in charging system checks out OK, problem is likely in the starter or starter relay.

Vacuum hose leak? whistling sound on 2002 grand prix se

Take some WD40 and with engine running spray some around all vacume lines if a line is leaking the engine will rev up, than you will know where its at, just watch where you spray it, stay away from exhaust and electrical as much as possible, you don't need to spray a whole lot,A intake gasget might be leaking too try around there consentrating around #1 cyl., just be carefull don't need a fire.

Problems refiring 99 pontiac grandam gt 3.4 v6

That is an intake backfire, meaning you have the valve timing wrong. Not quite sure right now on what it should be but check timing belt position and valve timing gear positions.
