Jeep cherokee tires are chirping when I turn and wont unlock

1998 jeep cherokee wont unlock back to 2wd from 4wd. It mechanically goes back into 2wd without any grinding or problems atleast thats what the select a trac dash monitor says . But the tires are still locked up and chirps when I turn. Is ther a module that electronically controls this? Help Please

Do you think it could be the linkage? Ive heard that sometimes it may need to be adjusted? I will try the liftting the front off the ground and taking it in the dirt to see if this works. thanks for the help...

The driving in the mud thing worked all I had to do was take it in the dirt and go from drive to revese and it popped right out. Thanks for all of you help you saved me gas, tires and time. I really appreciate it!!! Hope this solution works for more people as this is my first jeep and was worried about buying a used one but this trick worked great and now I wont be worried about putting it into 4wd :)

You may have to raise the wheels off the ground to get it to disengage due to the dry pavement binding things up. Another possiblity would be to drive in mud, dirt or wet grass so the wheels can slip and release the binding condition. Sometimes rolling backward in grass helps. I hope this helps.

I doubt that it is the linkage but I did just think of another important factor that gets overlooked sometimes. The tires need to be all the same size and not mismatched. You can't have like a P205 on the front and P215 on the back. With the wheels all locked together they will turn at different speeds if not the same size and tread wear. Also when turning, one front wheel turns faster than the other, another contributing factor to a binding condition.

Cant shift 1996 jeep cherokee into 4 wheel drive/shifter stuck

what aer tires touching? ice or dirt.?
if its not AWD "Quada-Trac"
then its part time 4wd
and is only for driving on ice or dirt
PT 4wd that is what Part time means.

see that here (down for week end)
https://www.jeepdied.com/

see the most common options there.
i cant guess what you bought.

to undo what you did,
get one tire on dirt or ice
and shift back to 2wd

or read your operators guide
good luck.....
i cant really help, can see your shifter
nor see what tires are rolling on.

ALL JEEP PART TIME SYSTEMS DO THIS,
WHEN DRIVERS DO NO READ THE OPERATORS GUIDE
IT'S NOT AWD! IF NOT.

THERE IS NO CENTER DIFFERENTIAL OR MAGIC CLUTCH

How to switch 4 wheel drive back to 2 wheel drive in my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee

that is because you have Part time 4wd? (what do you have)?
and must not drive on pavement free of ice.
its now winding up the drive train, bad for it too.

drive, to dirt, sand, gavel or grass and shift out of 4wd.
or jack up 1 tire, and same,
one tire must be on slippery surface. at least.

http://www.rubicon-trail.com/4WD101/driveline-bind.html

this happens on all PT 4wd
or using LOCK on AWD. dont.

it is a problem, your 4wd is not disengaging properly. Check switch box on axle.

Switching back 4WD to 2WD - 1998 Jeep Cherokee 4L Limited Petrol

With any 4WD like this, always move a few feet in the opposite direction when disengaging. If you were moving fwd in 4wd, switch to 2wd, back up a few feet, then go fwd.

95 jeep grand cherokee won't go back into 2wd.

Stick it in 2wd. Now back it up a good bit. Now pull it forward. Now make a turn. If it lurches, then repeat.

After this, check your tires. If the tires are different sizes. or the front is worn more than the rear, or even if they're different manufacturers, or if the tire pressure is low, then these could all be reasons that the transfer case is getting confused and is finding it hard to come out of 4wd.

This is assuming that the transfer case is in good working order and has the correct amount and type of fluid in it.
